Nice adam... lol

Ask yourselves how much they cost from RSLC shipped to the states... about that much, AND those are used, need to be sanded and primered, unless you can find them in your color, good luck...

So the price is not unreasonable, yet simply out of some of our reaches.

And no, these are no hondas.... thank god

Ez there captain hate, last time i checked people's opinions mattered.

We were just stating ours...but that little Hitler you just pulled there was quite uncalled for.

i think brainstorming and idea development is really important.

Without alternate views how would you be getting YOUR opinion accross to people far away from you?

you are using the internet....
without it you would just be sitting wherever you are thinking about whatever you think about and not expressing yourself to a wider variety of people as easily.

and i think we're both still in America, or whats left of it anyway

and yeah subaru rally guy i like it!
even though some people dont
sure it will cost a SMALL amount more but whats the point of re-making jdm skirts? why not add a bit of what we want to the order?
and with all this money why dont we just fly someone to japan to search their junk yards for cool stuff?
we'd have to find a way to get it back but its just another idea.

that still doesn't make it right to put down someone else's ideas mr. diversity.

For a 4x8 sheet of ABS and buying a plastic welder with plenty of rods, you could make these yourself for less and have them really be custom. Hell, you could all pitch in for the welder and send it to each other when you're done with it for the next guy... Don't know who'd get it in the end. Maybe someone would pay more for that privilege, but whatever. It's a very simple form and you could make it simply (maybe not even needing a welder at all - does 8' span the distance?) or get real fancy with a heat gun and even make a heat stamp out of some scrap alloy and put an impression in it that says anything you want or shows a logo. It may weigh a little more, but it's easier to repair and will probably be more durable.

Yeah, I'm in it for sideskirts as well, not so concerned with lettering personally...

...Sorry... channeling Beavis for a second.

Are we absolutely certain that no other Legacy skirt will fit, even allowing for a little work to make it fit? Has anyone tried one from, say, a Jetta or a 3 or 5- series BMW? I don't have my car right now, what is the length of the skirt we need?
This just seems like an awful lot of work to fab up if something else can substitute and bolt right on.

to be honest...

everywhere i go i look for a car that is just sitting there with nobody by it and i check to see if it has anything that closely resembles sideskirts, that i could make good use of :D

i saw a ?hyundai? or a ?kia? at a distance today that looked like it had something of the sort.. i could heist the pair off of a crashed one at the junk yard maybe.

and are there other subaru models that we could use? like the BD legacy or something?

Oh aaand guess what...

Pippen DOES have a plastic welder.. *see my post on the hood scoop, I was trying to modify the original, but no one could figure out the type of plastic.*

He had a few rods of many different types of plastic and the welder, he's a big hero around here for his ability in repairing ATV fenders and such.

so plastic is very much an option now I'm guessing...

The last time I flew out to Japan in 2005, it was $620 for a round trip ticket. I though didn't have to spend much money on top of that, since I had a Japanese g/f whose house I could crash at.
I'm no longer dating her, but I've a friend who lives just south of Yokohama *south of tokyo* where someone may stay if I asked nicely. I'd love to go... AND I speak fair Japanese anyhow, but I've some serious new job commitments here that allow me to go nowhere for a while.

And then shipping would be super cheap, body kit would just be checked at the terminal, I know it'll work, cause I've seen my buddy Toshi take his surfboard from SanDiego to Tokyo...

...food for thought.. ^^

Ski Bag!!

Ya might want to ask first, though. Sporting equipment is one thing, unidentifiable vehicle parts may raise suspicions. Not necessarily in Japan, but you'll probably get a cavity search when you get back here...

I can actually get there for free, (Continental employee) but getting back is always a problem, as the aircraft is often weight restricted, which bumps off all the standby fliers. I'll have to ask how much they'll charge for cargo that size.

I'm unsubscribing to this thread. If someone builds these and prices can you post a new thread and I'll consider it? Thanks,

I'm going to unsticky this thread as it doesn't appear like things are moving forward with the gb.

But by all means keep the discussion going on alternatives.

Thanks Josh, I don't mean to be a complainer, but it was kind of in the way of the parts bin. The OP isn't even posting anymore.

yeah, this is like a zombie thread.. :P

Well, I talked to Pippen, he said that plastic welding would be very tedious. He said, "yes it's possible, but no one would want to spend the kind of money that'd cost, even already owning the plastic welder. " He mentioned carbon fiber would be dirt cheap compared to welding plastic ones and it'd be cheaper and certainly more productive to have them made through mold injection that making each one individually... "unless one were to have tons of time and even more patients!"

So the most cost-effective way so far, seems to be via fiberglass or carbon fiber... He said carbon fiber would create a lighter side skirt by far and not run into anything near plastic on cost. AND it's repairable too. He mentioned that making side skirts wouldn't be so expensive as a hood made in carbon fiber, per square inch, since huge sheets cost much more per sq in. Narrow rolls of carbon are also quite easy to obtain.

He said that if more than five people ordered, the cost would come down, due to the mold making being divided up between the sets...

I'm going to open a new thread with this topic, so hopefully we can get an idea of how many people are wanting in on a group buy.

I disagree that plastic is that hard or expensive, but I don't know what kind of design he's envisioning. The point would be to weld as little as possible. It's certainly not more than injection molding! Has he ever priced that out? Try $5k for a mold of something as small as a coffee maker. Yeah, I'm welding my design instead when I finally find colored HDPE.

I suppose you could make some CF in a similar manner as fiberglass that would work since it's not a structural component at all.

He merely meant that if HE were to do it, shop time is not cheap... Plastic welding isn't that difficult or the pastic's price wasn't excessive, it was just that the time involved in EACH set would be nearly equal to making the mold for the fiberglass.

But did mention that a very determined individual could hammer a set, but it'd be some serious time making em. We once discussed making a hood scoop for my car, that wasn't a killer amound of work and it was a small part, so it wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. But that was BUILDING on the frame of my oem hoodscoop...

I've started a thread for the fiberglass group buy... http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=34427

Ah, right. And I was thinking from the point of view that someone would do their own as well, not a series, so yeah that would be quite expensive, especially as I would think the first one probably not end up being the final preferred design.

Carry on then! Nothing to see here!
