Haven't been on IRC in ages, not since you all moved to a different server (I dunno which one it is). But no other programs seem to behave that way...

OK, I screwed up.

I was viewing a certain website, in which adult humans engage in a certain type of behavior  , and I clicked on a link...

I immediately had like 3 popups and started involuntarily downloading exe files

I restarted the computer, and opened IE. It only goes to about:blank and nothing else. I can't sign onto AIM either...

All the proper lights are on for my DSL modem and my router, and just for kicks I tried my 56k connection and that didn't work either.

I have a feeling it's a browser problem as I can't even go to my router's or modem's IP. It still stays at about:blank... But that doesn't explain why I can't sign onto AIM...

I guess I better be careful which porn sites I look at

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I just got done cleaning a bunch of ad crap from my uncle's work computer....no he wasn't surfing porn....one of the ladies there was trying to d/l some stupid game.

Anyway...more then likely your hosts file got modified. Unfortunately these type of things are not cookie cutter to fix. I usually hunt around for things that don't look right and go from there.

D'ooooooh.

Have you installed SpyBot and AdAware yet?

How do I download this stuff with no Internet access?

I cleared my Cookies and Temp Internet files, I had NAV quarantine all those exe files, and then I deleted them, and that did no good at all...

How are you getting online right now?

If all else fails I can mail you a CD... You'd probably have it by the weekend.

I'm online at work right now, which I've been warned about several times

What would this CD do Vikash? I don't have a problem with that, I'd mail it back to you when I was done with it...

I'd just download the newest version of SpyBot and AdAware and any other anti-spyware anti-adware stuff I could find and burn it onto a blank CD. No need to return it or anything.

But ideally you'd find someone closer to you who could do it for you, since you'd get it faster.

Do you know anyone who lives near you that has broadband and a CD burner?

Yes I can do that.

Once again Vikash, you saved my hiney! :D

Hehehe... You shoulda installed AdAware and SpyBot when I suggested it on the first page of this thread. :P

Also, you might consider switching to Opera or Mozilla FireFox as your web browser instead of Internet Explorer. They're both well-featured and much safer. They also have some nice features like tabbed browsing (which is just perfect for forums like this one) and pop-up blocking.

Good luck.

Vikash, no offense but you couldn't see the forest for the trees...

Forget about System Restore, lets you restore your system to the last check-up point? ;)

So, I'm back online and going right now to install AdAware...

I guess f***buddies do come in handy, they remind you of obvious things

But I still do thank you for your help Vikash, as always :D

This is a test post to verify my internet connection and be sure this isn't bookmarked to appear offline...

Uhhh okay, this is weird...

I am losing my internet connection sporadically, my AIM signs off and refuses to sign back on, and any new website that I haven't looked at yet will not load.

If I've already looked at the website, it functions properly, that's how I can post this message right now...

In about 10-15 minutes I'm guessing, everything will work again...

Oh. I'd never heard of System Restore. Shows what I know. :)

Have you rebooted the router and modem and all, in case they have to do with the most recent trouble?

Bypass dns....type in the ip

Here's spybot from my server.

http://24.27.88.222:8080/programs/spybotsd13.zip

Also, search your computer for "hosts" without the quotes. You should find a file called that in the windows\system32\drivers\etc folder. Open that file, there really shouldn't be any numbers or stuff in there, other then the description talking about the file.

The problem with this adware crap is that if you delete the files, it just put's it right back. The way I go about cleaning things is running spybot or something to figure out which files I'm dealing with. Spybot won't get rid of them all. Once I find the file, I search the net, find out who's had a similar issue and see what program I need to get rid of it....and just keep doing that until I get it clean.

BTW...for all your pr0n needs....check out http://search.boobdex.com/

Also....run this program and post the results

http://24.27.88.222:8080/programs/HijackThis.zip

It'll help tell what programs are running.

I'm retarded, how do I do a screen capture?

If you press the PrintScreen key, the entire screen gets copied to the clipboard. Then if you open MS Paint or something like that, you can paste it in and save it to a file that you can email Josh or put on THAWA's image hosting or something.

damn....that's a bunch of stuff. First thing about your internet not working. The ad crap changed your internet settings. They added a proxy server line, and routed it to the localhost.

In IE, if you go to to tools, internet options, connections, lan settings. Everything in there should be unchecked.
