cool, maybe it was put there so that if that switch ever malfuntioned it would still work on the lock mechanism.

I hate that chime. I just want to know how to kill it - if I'm dumb enough to be unaware of the door being open I deserve to get hurt or dead. I remember it was easy in the '84.

Oh that's right - it only does it when the engine's off... Well, I hate it when I'm cleaning or working on the car with the door open and I have to hear that thing going off. I have a real problem with mechanical beeps and stuff - phones, faxes, computers - they drive me nuts. Why can't they use a nice sound? I wish they could use the sound of a woman or something instead.

I completely agree with you about the annoying beep. I always used to leave the doors open when I was at the slopes changing into my snowboard gear. I just turned the music up enough to override the stupid beep

Heh. What's funny about that is recently when I blew the fuseable link in the main fusebox, by grounding out my alternator with a ratchet, the only single, solitary thing on the entire car that would work was that goddamn beep. I mean, nothing at all was operational. But still that godforsaken, annoying beep....

bahahahaha! the beep will never die. Mine sometimes doesnt work. I think it has to do with the key position, as it occasionally doesnt come on, and then if i bump the keys, it'll start up, very frustrating, so if i'll have the doors open long enough, i'll sit there for a few minutes wiggling my keys around til it stops

Did anyone mention that plastic tab that breaks off so when you open the rear doors they lock the person in? A simple thing to repair but every car I have seen had at least one door this way.

That and the drivers side door lock cylinder that snaps in half so your key spins freely.

I don't know if I mentioned the plastic tab in this particular thread, but I've had both fronts go. Definitely a design flaw as there's no way they could have expected that little tab to last. But it is an easy fix.

you can disable the key chime by either removing the buzzer which looks like a relay or unplugging the switch at the key cylinder (very small two connector plug).

Design Flaws:
-Seat Belts
-Spoiler creates blind spot
-Cup Holders
-4EAT transmission
-Not enough adjustments on seats
-CV axles
-Sunroof Design, and lack of being able to replace just the gaskets
-Oil pan design
-No intercooler
-Not a Mercedes-Benz OM617 Turbo Diesel engine

Not necessarily a design flaw but why a donut-sized spare tire? How do you keep the AWD system functioning within its designed pararmeters if you get a flat?

FULL instrumentation gauges would have been good--voltmeter, ammeter, oil pressure, oil temperature, extra oil reserve capacity (like Porsche), etc.

Better brakes.

Better parking brake setup (full lock in 3-4 clicks).

Better headlights--glass would have been good, with more even beam spread on low beams and not have high beams angle off to the left.

Designed-in spaces for driving lights.

AT trans that engages more quickly (ever had someone about to run into you in parking lot and you shift into "D" and the car just sits there (seems like almost forever) before it engages?)

I'd like the radio sitting high with temperature controls below radio (I switch radio stations a lot and have to take my eyes off the road to find the buttons whereas temperature controls are not adjusted that often).

And others already mentioned . . .

Funny about the spark plugs--I never thought of the coolant tank as being in the way. I just use a combination of extensions. But it's so much easier than other engines I've had to work on.

The donut spare is supposed to have the same diameter as the other wheels.

I didn't know it was possible to put the switch between clicks... Your clicking mechanism must be pretty worn out.

I suppose it's probably okay, since inside it's probably just a potentiometer anyway. But I can't promise anything. If you see or smell smoke from your steering column, stop!

My donut is no where near the same diameter as the real world tires. The former tires (14" on steelies) on the car were about 26" high whereas the donut is about 23" in diameter--at least mine is that way.

So far no smoke from the light switch. I've had it set that way for years now. . . so I guess it's okay.

Just a few things that bug me

Legacy SS should have come with the EJ20G and AWIC just like they did everywhere else. (This started the trend to give us no real performance here, and it's still going on. Look at how crapy our WRX is)

The stupid auto shoulder seatbelt. If it doesn't choke you to death it will make people who don't use seatbelts feel ok about not using the lap belt. Just the shoulder belt won't do crap for you in a wreck so I don't see it as a safety feature like they claim.

The chrome trim, nuff said.

the auto belt was required in the early 90s on vehicles that didnt have airbags. Why they kept them through the line... i dont know, maybe to impart a safety image or improve insurance rates?

5% less insurance here on comprehensive or whatever that coverage is. I think it's 10% for air bags, but I don't know 'cause I don't have and don't want the things.

The cup holder hanging in front of the radio is a little bit of a nuisance... but I like where the radio is because you can hit the butons while resting your hand on the shift. However, I prescribe to the german performace car philosophy; one should not be drinking/eating etc. while driving. There are no cupholders in the early to mid 90's audis and porches (and some VWs), and they come right out and tell you that they did it on purpose!

The rear seats in the wagon dont allow you to have half folded down and half as a functional seat... that would be nice.

The stock shift assembly is pretty sloppy, especially when you get some miles on it. The metal piece that the knob threads onto also works its way off that rubber insert, which can also be a annoying. Other than that... I love my Subaru(s), they are damn fine specimens of engineering, and I can live without the stupid creature comforts.

German Law dictates this no eating or drinking while driving, so that is why most German cars in the US didn't come with cup holders until only a few years ago, until the US market started to demand them. I had to custom make a cup holder for my Mercedes-Benz

, just so I could have a cup holder and be cooler than everyone else...

Wow, there is actually a law? I love it. All it said in the brochure was that they didn’t include these things because they didn’t think people should be eating or drinking while driving.

I kinda like German laws… they are few, and succinct (e.g., Bier should contain only the following ingredients: Fresh water, Barley and Hops… NICE!)

The rear seat actually can be the 60/40 split. that's why it exists. The folded down half just cannot be folded down completely flat, as the bottom of the seat has to be lifted for that
