I sold the 16G to a member on the board.

On a side note I got a good race in with an srt4 last night from a roll at about 35. Ended up pulling him pretty good except when i shifted to third, the engine bogged down and he started to catch back up until it hit the higher rpm and then we pulled more on him.

Dan, you keep saying 'we'. Just how much racing does your wife let you do ;)?

I beat the heck outta my car. I always manual-shift my 4eat, Ive been doing it since I got it (its at 289k miles now). I never drive stupid in traffic though, I have tuition$$$$$ to worry about, dont have the extra cash to be paying more insurance.

I think my Forester has seen over 4,000 RPM's only once or twice since I've owned it.

I've been around the 140 mark before, but it was in an STi flat out in 5th at 6700RPM. Whatever that comes out to, is how fast I was going.

WOW, you guys really beat down on these cars.... when ever I drive I shift at about 2k rpm's on every gear? but sure I get on it everyonce and a while.

I hit redline probably 10-20 times daily

If you are consistantly driving under 2k rpms then you are lugging your engine. That isn't really good either. Keep it between 2k-3k rpm if you want to baby it.

If you shift at exactly 2000, you might lug the bottom end of each gear, but under 2k isn't lugging automatically...for me around 1500 or below is lugging.

That's because you have to 'cause your wagon is so damn slow!

:P

I hit redline a few times usually too...but its because I like to go fast

(that's such a Nico answer, lol)

I'd say 1500 RPM is fine, feels happy in my cars. Boost if I want it, too - not much but some.

I think I've hit redline once in Whitey. I'm usually 1500RPM - 2500 RPM or so, I obey the traffic laws and such the majority of the time now (used to always speed). It's boring. But sometimes when traffic's light I'll get on it a bit, maybe to 4000. Plenty of pull and noise and general whee, I try not to do it for too long so I don't attract too much attention...

I'll shift at 5500 or so in a race, although it's been a while.

Edit: when I'm driving Sylvia, it's a different story. I'll just give her a little throttle until I'm at the speed limit, and watch in amazement every time as the speed increases and the tach stays pretty much right at 2250 RPM. Didn't know Subaru made a CVT

Sylvia is a Justy?

What exactly is "lugging"?

Nope; Sylvia is, coincidentally enough, my silver SS. Her autotragic transmission just needs clutch packs something fierce.

well, that's ironic, because you mentioned CVT, and the Justy was the first car in US production to have the Continuously Variable Transmission.

Lugging is when the RPMs are too low, and you're stressing the engine...it's really obvious when you are, because the engine will groan with a sound not unlike a deep bass note coming out of a subwoofer. Happens just below 1500 rpms in the higher gears. You'd have to lug your engine a hell of a lot to cause problems with the rod bearings and such. I don't really know the technical definition, but that's what I've come to understand about it.

Sure feels like a CVT. I know it's not, but I've driven an AWD CVT Vue before and its a very similar ride at light throttle.

I don't dare get into boost on that car; it pulls fine to the end of the gear but then takes a good 2-3 seconds to shift to the next gear. I only let that happen once, and determined that it was not a good idea until I did something about the transmission.

Didn't know the Justy had a CVT; I'll have to check that out.

Yeah, the Justy either had a stickshift or an ECVT. It works nothing like the newer CVT's like in Nissans and Audis. The Justy ECVT uses belts instead of chains. I want to say the design was purchased off the unusual DAFmobile that was sold in the US (if it was even sold in the US, I'm not sure) in very limited numbers.

Anyhoo, the ECVT in both cars were nothing but trouble. If you have a Justy with the original ECVT, you're driving it on borrowed time I'm afraid :(

true that, a Justy with CVT was a reliability disaster.

I always drive slow and almost never hit the boost, when the kids are in the car.

There may possibly be a dent in the firewall behind the throttle pedal in my car.

Yeah, I can't see how any CVT could be that reliable in the first place... and you sure can't plan a racing vehicle around one yet. Although that sure would be ultimate, completely throttle-controlled constant RPM...

Do snowmobiles have CVT's... or centrifugal clutches?

I can't afford to be running around past 3000-3500...gas costs too much.

They have em in the Toyota Prius...and the prius has been pretty reliable like all Toyotas.

The Prius does not have a CVT. It's not even really a transmission.
