ahhh i finally read this thread. NICO- i really like the look of your car, especially the wheels+tires.

i dont know if you know me, im doing the same swap, in a 95 impreza coupe, cept FWD :( im looking for a parts car to make it AWD since MY clutch is soooo slippy. ( i had it running on the 1.8 ECU but now im rewiring)

did you use the 1.8 engine harness adapted to fit on the 22t? thats what i did, and am putting my ECU where the impreza ECU goes.

can i ask you what all you did to get ignition to work? is there anything special? i know i gotta put a diode somewhere for self-shutoff control. anything else i should look out for? i got the B47 connector all spliced and hooked up to the ECU, 3 more connectors to go!

thanks, and nice car

Nico - You're dad's probably right about the wheels if they are real mags. 'Mag' wheels were originally called that because they contained a lot of magnesium. They were very light, but somewhat fragile and magnesium has a bad habit of burning so they don't use it as much, if at all, for wheels any more. BMW, for one, is using it in engine blocks now. I suspect it's an interesting alloy, though.

Natoe, He did all of the wiring like yours. and his dad did the port and polish like me.

I just got the equal length exhaust manifold for my car. I need to port them out and then get them ceramic coated. I am gonna get a higher temp coating this time. So if either of you guys are looking at new exhasut manifolds in the future.

Didn't Porsche make some engine blocks out of magnesium too? I remember a firefighter once telling me about how they put out an engine fire and afterwards found that there was no engine block left.

That's interesting, I know it takes at least a propane torch to set off magnesium. So its not like if someone drops a ciggarette next to it, its going to go off.

Cool thing about magnesium is you can use to to set off a reaction with aluminum and Iron(III)? oxide (aluminum shavings and rust in a powder form). Which has many cool uses.

Yeah, Iron(III) oxide. Its not actually a spark, its just a catalyist. Magnesium itself doesn't start the reaction, it just makes it a hella lot faster.

I think. lol

My old Panasonic toughbook's case was made out of Magnesium. When they tested it for CR they stuck it in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes and it survivied.

This is the same laptop that cops and military personell use in the feild. The HD's are surrounded by a gel that suspends them in the caddy so it won't get hurt if you drop it.

Magnesium burns very hot. The problems occured when a regular car fire burned near the wheels.

Porsche did use magnesium and might still to some degree. IIRC, the 2.7 in the '70's Carrera RS had a magnesium case with nikasil liners. I'm no Porschephile so that's from a hazy memory mostly 'cause that's one of the only Porsches I'd like to own (or at least a replica with a 3.0 built from a 911SC).

There have been a lot of mfg, using magnesium, but it's usually reserved for racing. I mentioned BMW as I they're one of the few (only?) doing it today with a road car block.

I heard a tale of a old Corvette that had a tire blowout, and the magnesium wheel caught fire. The whole car burned into smoke because of that one wheel, coz they couldn't put the fire out.

IIRC from my chem class in HS, magnesium has to be 100% immersed in water in order for the flame to be extinguished.

Are you thinking of tracking down a mag rim to try and watch it burn?

evolutionmovement ya they are magnesium i couldnt spell it so i siad "mag" the fiat rims are very very light and soft

hahaha you guys are crazy, you want to melt a rim down for a test, take pics i want to see hahaha.

subawhatsubawho hahah lets just say i got conections, but i cant abuse them to make money so i just get what i need and go.

Natoe & bmxpunk, no the way me and my dad did it was we striped the hole car down, put it a side then we stried my legacy turbo, took what i needed and scraped it. i also had striped another turbo legacy down before the swap, it was a A/T. i used the better wirieng for my impreza. we layed the hole wiring, i mean the hole wiring front to back of the turbo legacy A/T car. then we wired up, the tail lights, the door lights, and the dash with heater controls, becuse they where all diffrent. thats the only thing you need to wire up from a impreza to legacy.

then we put the motor in and all the other stuff like dash carpet and so on. after all that we tested everything to make sure it was all working good and it was.

Natoe where the impreza ecu is i put my e-manage. the factory ecu in a turbo legacy is under the dash, it can only go there so i put it under the dash in the impreza also.

bmxpunk the turbo in the pic is a t-bird/factory up grade, it gets to 18psi and then drops to 17psi up top

as I recall, only certain magnesium will burn, pure maybe? dont remember. most everything car related made of magnesium is an alloy. Type 1 VW aircooled motors have magnesium cases.
once you do get magnesium burning though, theres not much that will stop it.

VW block fires are cool! Kind of a bitch to light, but it lasts all night long. If you can, con somebody into taking a leak on it. They'll never do it again!

Edit: NICO, nice car! I'm thinking of finding a two door and and doing a semi-22b replica.
