Hi Carl, Josh may have given up on us this evenimg. The term
detonation covers several things and they are also called ping, knock
ect. and it can happen for different reasons a small bit of burning
carbon left from a previous burn sometimes will just cause a small
preignition or backfire and probably do no harm a preignition from a
hot charge or high boost can cause damage at times, usually to a
piston and the last is when the charge is ignited just from heat and
pressure and the plug also ignites the top part of the charge and the
two flame fronts from top and bottom collide, this is the worst one
and can cause very high pressures in the chamber and can cause some
damage. But fortunatly most of the time our knock sensors can detect
this and retard the timing and protect the engine before things get
out of hand and this type of damage s fairly rare.
