EEPROM & ECU Hacking

Hey Guys,

I've been emailing a guy in New Zealand, who has an aftermarket eeprom out of Japan. He's in the process of trying to figure out how to hack the assembly code on it.....or if it's C or whatever. It sounds like he's a programmer and knows what he's doing.

He is looking for anyone that has US spec turbos, or even ej20t swaps to try the chip out. It sounds like if he can get enough info he can reprogram the eeprom for other vehicles.....like the N/A engines.

The only hitches that I can see is that the roms can only be used on an 8-bit ECU. From what we've found out, the 89-91 models had the 8-bit ECU, and the 92-94 models were 16-bit. Also he said you need to run at least 96 octane.....now I don't know if that is RON or a different octane rating system then what we have in the US.

Here is the original thread he started on the USMB
http://pub1.ezboard.com/fultimatesubaru ... 4524.topic

Here's what he's replied to me.

>>>>>>>>
Hey there Josh, I'm pretty sure from what I know and others have told me, that the chip is no good to you with your car being naturally aspirated, but can you tell me if you have such thing as a 1989-91 turbo legacy in the USA, and if so what motor was it fitted with ej20t or ej22t , if you do have ej20t motors in early subbies, let me know , and see if you can hook me up with someone who has one, so we can try this chip in your US spec vehicles, you can only use it with 8 bit cpu's and you must run at least 96 octane fuel, or boy oh boy you'll regret it!! lol, but I'm not kidding you its about a 25-35kW increase in power which aint to be sneezed at.. I'm expecting to receive some code soon for what we call a group n minus chip, its a bit tamer than the group n, it only runs about 14psi boost(1bar) so that could be of interest to someone as well, let me know what you can find out, (ps I have someone working on cracking the source code, we are pretty sure all you guys are wrong about it being obd1(whatever that is, I assume its some sort of Motorola coding, this must only be for the factory code), we think its a variant of C or C++, when I find out I will let you know, and if it turns out to be C, then I can easily rewrite new source code for your NA subbie.
>>>>>>>>>

So if any of you are interested in helping him out, shoot him an email thecates@paradise.net.nz

I know I'd love to have this valuable info......and possibly the power ;)

Josh

If it is the same eeprom chip I have a few of them. It is not in C or
anything like it. I went this route some time ago and even tried to
buy some of the blank chips as there was no substitute for it
available. Fujitsu built the original but hasn't made them for years.
I also paid rather dearly for a lot of paper from a university in
Japan and so did a lot of other people and it wasn't worth a lot
because it didn't have the source code. So unless he has found what a
lot of people were looking for several years ago I wouldn't get to
excited and if it is part of what was going on about 8-10 years ago I
definatly would not send any money with out checking first.

EEPROM & ECU Hacking

If I remember correctly it was A Fujitsu IC and had 1 meg ROM and it
had 30 or 32 pins compared to the 28 on the NM27C256 Fairchild that a
guy in Canada sent me when we were working on this. He was stacking
these chips trying to get enough memory. We could get a hex dump but
that was pretty useless. The extra pins made the Fujitsu chip a real
odd duck item as everyone else started going LSI and put the ROM on
other chips. As far as I know nobody other than Fujitsu made any other
ROM that were bigger than 500k in Dual inline. If he can make something
I think I still have some information on how to install it, some
jumpers have to be cut or something.

EEPROM & ECU Hacking

It's very unlikely to be "C or whatever".. It's almost certainly assembly
language, using opcodes specifically for the cpu in the ecu.

I've messed around with the eproms in previous cars, to some limited
success. Do you have the email address of this guy? I wouldn't mind finding
out a little bit more about the Subie's computer, and hopefully helping him
too.

Cheers,

Toby

It's very unlikely to be "C or whatever".. It's almost certainly
assembly
language, using opcodes specifically for the cpu in the ecu.

I've messed around with the eproms in previous cars, to some limited
success. Do you have the email address of this guy? I wouldn't mind
finding
out a little bit more about the Subie's computer, and hopefully helping
him
too.

Cheers,

Toby

he's a programmer and knows what he's doing.

an 8-bit ECU. From what we've found out, the 89-91 models had the 8-bit
ECU, and the 92-94 models were 16-bit. Also he said you need to run at
least 96 octane.....now I don't know if that is RON or a different
octane rating system then what we have in the US.

me, that the chip is no good to you with your car being naturally
aspirated, but can you tell me if you have such thing as a 1989-91 turbo
legacy in the USA, and if so what motor was it fitted with ej20t or
ej22t , if you do have ej20t motors in early subbies, let me know , and
see if you can hook me up with someone who has one, so we can try this
chip in your US spec vehicles, you can only use it with 8 bit cpu's and
you must run at least 96 octane fuel, or boy oh boy you'll regret it!!
lol, but I'm not kidding you its about a 25-35kW increase in power which
aint to be sneezed at.. I'm expecting to receive some code soon for what
we call a group n minus chip, its a bit tamer than the group n, it only
runs about 14psi boost(1bar) so that could be of interest to someone as
well, let me know what you can find out, (ps I have someone working on
cracking the source code, we are pretty sure all you guys are wrong
about it being obd1(whatever

its some sort of Motorola coding, this must only be for the factory code),
we think its a variant of C or C++, when I find out I will let you know, and
if it turns out to be C, then I can easily rewrite new source code for your
NA subbie.
