Check the basics first - Belt tension, fluid level and quality(not black, bright red), and any leaks(racks and pumps are common.
Hope this Helps.

legacy power steering question

I would check the belt tension and quality of the belts first. It sounds like they are slipping.

legacy power steering question

What I'm wondering: When you feel the loss in power is it a momentary thing, or does it last for several seconds?

In reply to what Josh mentioned: I don't know if the belt tension would have any influence over the loss during _heavy_breaking_ although under acceleration I could see that happen.

I get a weird feedback from my wagon when I'm throwing the wheel from hard right over to hard left in a fast, tight cornering situation (same feedback when I go the opposite direction too). I suspect what I am experiencing is suspension related and not engine-mechanical.

So can you give us some more details?
