A man with a dangerous question

Why the hell are we on Yahoo! groups?

I remember when we seceeded from the i-club and I understand the reasons
behind that move. We were all fed up with non BC-BF'ers randomly posting
garbage and crowding us out. I think Imprezer made the offer to give us our
own section to work within and we decided we wanted our own space anyways...
Fine. No problem. I represent one of the earlier posters (relatively
speaking) on this board and I've been satisfied with it since...

However, I feel that we could do better than eGroups/Yahoo! is doing for us.
Threaded messageboard would be nice - more or less what the i-club has -
divided up into topics so the board doesn't get loaded with mixed
information, keep the files section, maybe add some other stuff, etc.

That said, I'd like to throw open the idea/questions to the group. I am not
advocating a division. I'm not trying to split the group, I'm just wondering
if there's an opinion out there that agrees with my own, and if so, what
should/can/would we do about it.

Flame on!

Best,

Sam "Sambo" Barrett

Hey Sam,

I too have been on here since the beginning. I've got all the messages since the beginning.

Personally, I like the email option.....I use it over posting through the web.

The problem with a thing like i-club and the VBB or even ezboard is that someone has to maintain setup the server, and or create the web styling....etc.

Hosting server or something.....that's money.....it takes a bit of resources to setup a board like that.

Plus you have all the old messages.....all that stuff to try and move over and setup...

I'm happy with how things are setup now....but I'm open to other's opinions and suggestions.....

Josh

I still like the email setup... Like Josh says, you have to have someone
setup and maintain the site. As it is now, we are getting "free" storage
space.

I also like the idea of another format for this group.
I love all of the information that I get out of the
emails, but a lot of useful information ends up posted
in an email that doesn't actually contain the topic
that it covers. So when I go back to reference that
information, it takes a LONG time to find what I'm
looking for. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of
other options that include being free. All other
options also include a lot more overhead in terms of
management time and everything else. I'm not trying
to be critical, I've gained a lot of my knowledge
about our cars from this list, it's just difficult
managing all of this information in email format.
Either way, I'm just happy that we can all communicate
in some form otherwise I'd be stuck paying other
people to do very simple things to my precious car.
Thanks again guys.

all very good points and persononally i hate all these ads on here
but who has the money or time to spare. most importantly the time as
i think we could most likely get the good people on here to give up
donations for a good site of our own. i still jump on the i-club to
check out the legacy forum but it lacks and also the afformentioned
issues on there. but well yeah for now, at least it's free eh? :P

if someone has a domain name they aren't using... and if someone want to design and maintain it. i have an athlon 650 w/ 128 ram sitting here doing nothing. it's only got a 6gb drive in it now, but i feel as though that would be sufficient for a while. (like i said... it sits here with nothing installed but the basic os) i'd be more than happy to install either linux or win2k, set it up as a webserver and donate it's resources to the group. i'm on a static ip as well, so that shouldn't be a problem with directing the domain name i have everything here to network them.... just haven't had a reason so far... :)

Thanks for the offer Devin.

What sort of internet connection do you have? I run my own server as well on my cable connection....for the most part it's fairly reliable....however speed will not be what it needs to be for an entire group to use......

I might just have an extra domain name, I will find out by tommorow
just how badly I have screwed up getting my web site up and going this
is all a bit new to me. I was under the mistaken assumption that all I
had to do was tell someone that I wanted a web site and that would be
it.

I agree, as do we all, that LegacyWorks has gone far and above our
expecations when Matt first created them a year and a half ago. For
the longest time, it was just so-so busy, but this year, it seems
like the word has spread and a lot of people have joined up.

Thank goodness we would never have the level of maintenance that a
place like the i-club has, but it does require a computer with a very
reliable connection and enough bandwidth to make it usable for a half
dozen or more people at the same time.

Yahoo provides all of this, albeit in a somewhat clunky interface,
but it still seems to serve the purpose willingly.

On windoze it wouldn't be able to handle it. On linux, we could run it AND we could cluster it with another machine... But I don't want this to spread into a technical discussion. Right now I just want to know if there is any interest. We can follow it up with discussions like this later...

Yeah....You're right Dave.....it's a pretty much set it and forget it

I would be interested in this. Does anyone know how much bandwith would be needed each month? Cause I have some I Could possibly share.

On windoze it wouldn't be able to handle it. On linux, we could run it AND
we could cluster it with another machine... But I don't want this to spread
into a technical discussion. Right now I just want to know if there is any
interest. We can follow it up with discussions like this later...

Thanks for the offer Devin.

What sort of internet connection do you have? I run my own server as well
on my cable connection....for the most part it's fairly reliable....however
speed will not be what it needs to be for an entire group to use......

if someone has a domain name they aren't using... and if someone want to
design and maintain it. i have an athlon 650 w/ 128 ram sitting here doing
nothing. it's only got a 6gb drive in it now, but i feel as though that
would be sufficient for a while. (like i said... it sits here with nothing
installed but the basic os) i'd be more than happy to install either linux
or win2k, set it up as a webserver and donate it's resources to the group.
i'm on a static ip as well, so that shouldn't be a problem with directing
the domain name i have everything here to network them.... just haven't had
a reason so far... :)

A man with a dangerous question

Posted: Mon May 13, 2002 12:28 am
by Sam & Beth Barrett
Technical detail. All technical details are just a matter of effort / time X resources. I am just trying to ascertain if it's even worth persuing. If people are interested/tired of Yahoo! or are uninterested/like Yahoo!: that's what I'm after. If we like this, why do we like it? If you don't like it, then why?

Clearly there are some upsides to Yahoo! (free hosting, manageability, easy to use, etc) and there are some downsides (search function is lousy, e-mails make it hard to track subjects, no one can find us with an internet search engine, etc).

If people are happy. Then that's great. I'm all for staying. I'll be the last person to try and push something through that will only "fix" what is clearly not broken.

On the other hand, if people are interested in doing some more with this... I've got some ideas and a T1 and some experience... Sounds like a few other people have resources - in the form of big pipes, machines, technical skill, time....

If nothing else, we are just persuing a question for the sake of knowing more than we did before.

Keep the mojo comming. I've already expanded what I thought I knew about this a couple times reading yours and everyone else's responses...

A man with a dangerous question

Posted: Tue May 14, 2002 10:28 am
by Ryan Douthit
For the record…I have a couple message boards…. One at least with a small car section already, I can add a specific BC-BF section if the group decides it’s a good way to go.

http://www.midnightcafe.com <http://www.midnightcafe.com/> – Currently UBB 6, upgrading to PHPbb when I get a chance. (Almost 2000 members and it’s been in operation for about 2 years)

http://www.cyberonion.com <http://www.cyberonion.com/> – PHPbb, a new site I’m launching next week, not a good topic to fit a car section. But it shows the features midnightcafe.com will have once I get around up upgrading it to the alternate BBS software (assuming the UBB > PHPbb parser works as advertised)

Anyhow, there’s my .02
