I am still screwing around trying to determine why I keep getting ECU codes 22 knock sensor, 31 throttle position sensor and 32 O2 sensor. I know my air/fuel gauge works, because I put it in a Suzuki Swift and it cycled back and forth just as it used to in my subie. I know the O2 sensor works at the first connector near the clutch. I know the ecu is in some kind of limp dick mode because the O2 gauge hugs the middle range most of the time and is not as lively as it used to be. I have two 5speed ECUs that I have traded out periodically, but just for shits and giggles I would like to try my auto tranny 93 ECU, just for a fresh perspective. I have had a tough time getting those three pesky codes to clear. Can someone refresh my memory of how to neuter that automatic ECi so it will be happy with a 5speed?

By the way, my theory is that the 02 sensor wire is bad and that the most likely area in which it is bad is somewhere under my air/air angled old-type WRX intercooler. I once lost my R-12 freon by being stupid and laying the AC hose where the clutch actuation arm could saw it in two, so I bet I'm also of abrading a wire until it has tons or resistance or a half-assed short. Any bets or theories?

It's the wiring that determines the auto vs. 5-spd difference. It's actually in the wiring harness. So I think the ECU is the same between the auto and 5-spd. It's just one little wire that tells the ECU whether to treat the car as an auto or 5-spd.

It looks like pin 20 on connector B48. I've attached the PIN I/O diagrams and what they are and their specified values.

If you don't see a wire on that pin 20 connector B48. Then you should be able to swap out ECU's no problem.

I actually snipped this wire, and it did do something.

My idle speed dropped from mid 2000s to 1400 when cold, then down to
the 700 when warm. Other than that, i haven't seen anything
different.

Dave, what was your warm idle speed before you snipped this wire? and what kind of fuel consumption are you getting? I have an ex-auto GT wagon which was converted by Pro-drive donkeys years ago (way before my ownership). My idle hovers around 1000 - 1000 when warm and consumption has always been a real monster 20mpg!

I'd check your ECU, and see if they snipped that wire. If they didn't. The car still thinks it's an auto and will adjust accordingly. The ECU should be behind the center portion of the dash.

What this wire does is allow a greater change of timing at idle to
compensate for the increased drag of the torque converter, cutting it
cuts down the timing range at idle by 6 degrees.

I have my idle pretty low, it hovers around 725-775 when warm, but
this is easily adjusted with the idle screw on the throttle cable
where it connects to the throttle body.

I used to get 18-19 before the swap, now i get 20-22, depending on
how much i goose it and how many steady-speed miles i drive.
