My knock sensor appears to be failing. My check engine light blinks
on for a second or two every few days. When I check the code it
indicates a failure with the Knock Sensor.

I looked up the procedure for replacing it in my Haynes Repair Manual
(I know it's not the best), and it looks like it's a really big pain
to replace (remove intake manifold to get to it). I was wondering if
is really that hard? I guess the problem is that I don't know what
the sensor looks like. Is it located on the driver side rear of the
engine, and has one wire coming out of it with a bolt in the middle
of it (mine says 960 Japan A53-000 R00 on it)? Also the manual says
you have to drain the water out of the engine before replacing it.

I have a 1990 non-turbo Legacy with an automatic transmission.

Haynes is full of shit on their procedure. All you need is a socket and
a long extension. Unscrew for the block, unplug from the electrical
connector, and pull it out, and replace with new one.

as Josh mentioned, it's 'easy as' to replace, especially on a non turbo engine. I recently replaced mine (RS Liberty turbo) and had to remove intercooler to get to it. Simply unplug wire, use socket on extension and then R & R...
My car now boosts better and my economy is also better.. It has been an intermittent problem for over 6 months. Finally had enough of the constant error code coming up ( every 4 days ) and replaced it- should of done it heaps earlier.
