looks like air to air of some kind..not sure whose though
BTW guys, I am told by a good friend that know the turbos well that the 1996
WRX intercooler fits with some realtively minor (for us at a shop at least)
mods.
Question: how straightforward is this? Reason I ask is becasue I havea 96
IC coming to us with some used STi parts, but want to know ehat I am in for
if possible

I believe it is the intercooler from a Saab 900. I've seen a site
that gives mounting instructions. Reply if anyone wants that site.
I wasn't sure how reliable it was, so I just went with the wrx ic.

Well, I would have posted the site with my first reply, but I am in
no way affiliated with this guy and wasn't sure if I could just toss
around his site as I pleased. Anyway, I just happen to cross this
site when surfing the web, looking for anything on intercooling a
suby. The site gives a little bit of instruction, but has good
pics. Hope it helps.

"4> The intercooler will sit close to the firewall. You might want to
build an "L" shape bracket to mount the intercooler. Take off the
windshield wiper cover and drill two holes in the bracket and the sheet
metal. Use a bolt with washers and nuts to mount the bracket. The
intercooler side does not need mounting hardware, just two 5/16's holes
in the bracket. Make sure to slide this over first before actually
drilling through the firewall. "
that's from the webpage...
is he saying to mount it to the firewall? That's not a good idea is it?
I thought you'd want to mount it to the engine with all the flex when
switching gears and such...

If you look at the first picture (link below) you will
see where he does in fact mount it to the firewall. I
would agree with you on that not being a good idea.

Like I said before, I'm in no way affiliated with the guy who made
this page. I just came across it, so I don't agree nor disagree
with the setup. I just wanted to let everyone know this. By the
way, I am the buyer of the car on Ebay that has the setup this
discussion was started with. I can let everyone know how it is set
up when I get the car. It won't be for a couple weeks, though. I'm
kinda in Ohio going to school full-time, and working part-time, so I
won't be free to get it until around the 17th. If everything works
out, I will have a couple parts I can get rid of. I don't know
exactly what at this point. But let it be known, group will have
first dibs.
