AGX settings survey

What settings has everyone found best on their AGX's for maximum performance? How about on the stock springs, in particular?

Any recommended tuning techniques? Signs that tell you are overdamped or underdamped?

After a late night of swerving like mad through Baltimore's parking lots and ravaging pot holes, it seems like 2/4 (front/rear) is the best combo. I dialed it up to 3/6, but it seemed like it was starting to compromise response time from the weak stock springs. Am I missing the boat?

Well.....I don't have the AGX's

But I do have the GR2's and just installed whiteline springs. I really need to wait until the springs get seated and stuff before I can give you final comments.

But first impressions are good. I could probably go for a little stiffer struts....but I think when the springs wear in, they will be fine.

If you have a lot of bounciness......you have an underdamped situation. If the ride is horriblely stiff, follows every bump & contour you could be overdamped.

It's a fine line of finding the right setup.....

I have been using the AGX's on my '92 Turbo (stock springs) for almost 3 - years now. I have autocrossed, TSD rallied and ice-raced with them as well as year round driving.

I change the settings according to venue/mood.

everyday driving with 17" Kumho's - 2f 4r

autocross with same 17" - 3f 6r

TSD rally - brisk - gravel with 15" Michelin rally tires - 4f 4r

ice race with 15" snow tires - 1f 2r

My adjustments depend on several things: tire pressure, wheel/tire weight, available traction, how firm of a ride I am willing to live with.

One of the biggest tuning factors is the balance between front/rear. When running a gravel TSD event I soften the rear dampning/tire pressure which allows the tail of the car to easily come out to help negotiate the tight corners, aka: 4 wheel drift.

I don't believe there is one correct setup, It is that adjustability which allows you to set up your car to suit your current conditions/driving style.

The AGX products have the following approximate damping force values.
When adjusted, both rebound and compression damping forces change.

Setting#:
Relative Value
1 - Same as Factory 100

2 - Same as our GR2 products (10~15% firmer than Factory) 115

3 - 50% firmer than #2 172

4 - 30% firmer than #3 223

For an eight position adjustable product, the damping force values are approx.
the following:
With #2 being Factory at a relative value of 100,

#1 = 95 (5% softer than Factory #5 = 143.5 (43.5% firmer than Factory)
#2 = 100 (Factory damping force) #6 = 172 (72% firmer than Factory)
#3 = 107.5 (7.5% firmer than Factory) #7 = 197.5 (97.5 firmer than Factory)
#4 = 115 (15% firmer than Factory) #8 = 223 (123 % firmer than Factory)

Awesome info. I can't believe KYB is so engineer-friendly by sharing that much technical info about their product. Ciper and KYB, you are both my heros.

yeah....I've been very impressed with KYB's tech support. They gave me the info for the GR2's as well.

GR2 Strut damping info

Code: Select all

Fronts
0.1 m/s 60/20 kg
0.3 m/s 120/40 kg
0.6 m/s 200/70 kg

Rears
0.1 m/s 45/20 kg
0.3 m/s 95/40 kg
0.6 m/s 130/80 kg

I've been running 6 on the rears since I got them. My coilovers are GAB Revolution II, but i guess they are a division of KYB (or just use KYB components). I did see from their site that GAB is part of Yokohama.
