Engine Oil Level Check

Well,
I've happened upon a strange problem. A couple of days ago, I
checked my engine oil on a slightly off-level driveway after a 170
mile highway drive. What I found was that the dipstick wasn't
showing hardly a drop of oil. After checking, re-checking, and
checking again after the car had cooled for about 1 and a half hours,
I got the same very low reading. I added approximately a quart and
that brought the level up to the full mark on the dipstick. Now
yesterday, I checked it in a completely flat garage surface and I got
the mark to show a great deal over-full! As in the quart I added had
actually not been needed. I drained the quart this morning. Now I'm
wondering if a slight off-level surface would give such an erroneous
reading on was there perhaps a pocket not allowing the oil to fill to
the level? Any input is greatly appreciated. I've got a '91 Legacy
EJ22T U.S. spec. Thanks,
Andrew Mouser
