Guys,

I have a relateively urgent problem. My passenger
side rear wheel has a stripped stud. I got the parts
I need to replace it and have thus far pulled off the
caliper and rotor. Now this is where I'm running into
problems. I can't figure out what else needs to be
removed to get the stud out. It seems the parking
brake drum mechanism is in the way of extricating this
stud. Does anyone know what else needs to be removed
to get this sucker out? Should I disassemble the
parking brake on that side? I'm stressed about this
because the Crap Haynes manual doesn't cover this
exact topic and I don't have any other resources
besides you guys, and the i-Club, but they haven't
been very helpful at all. Any info you could throw my
way would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.

By the lack of response should I assume no one on the
list has had to shange a wheel stud before? I really
need to get this taken car of, so any help would be

Brian- I was in the same boat with my '90 Wagon, but my problem is the front
wheel stud, so the parking brake issue does not apply. Either way, removing
what you need to should not be that big a deal, just keep it clean and keep
it in order. I am not sure if the Chilton for our BC-BF is any better then
Haynes, but you might go to the library and get that. between the two
manuals, and your necessity, I am sure you can get it done. Getting the
front one in is a snap really, bang one out and carefully bang the new one
in. Or you might have to bite the bullet and have a tire shop do it. If
you have a reputable one where you live, they should do it for cheap.

I had to replace a rear wheel stud when I bought my RS Liberty. I could not get the wheel nuts undone - had cheap aftermarket nuts fitted with the non Subaru wheels. The wheel nuts were the type where you need a 'key' which fits over the wheel nut where the wheel brace fits over to be able to undo the nuts. Well the idiots fitted the nuts on too tight so the key stripped the nut and I could no longer get it off.
I had to drill out the stud. Once drilled out enough the nut came off. Then I could at least remove the wheel.
I now had to replace the partially drilled out stud.
Remove the wheel, brake caliper, and rotor.
I kept drilling out the stud until I could hit it out of the axle. Because they are a tapered fit just hitting them out won't work but once fully drilled out the stud simply comes out.
From there fitted the new stud, slipped it in from behind and used a wheel nut to pull it through. This requires tightening , loosing, tightening etc, etc, until the stud in pulled all the way into place.
