For those in the Northwest who enjoy a good weekend of racing, the
NW Region of the SCCA is look for some enthusiasts to spend a
weekend in the woods watching racecars. Please read (and please
feel free to repost this anywhere there are warm bodies):

Volunteers are needed for the Wild West International Performance
Rally on September 7 & 8, 2002. No experience is needed.

The Wild West International Rally is a two day Performance Rally
hosted by Northwest Region SCCA. The 2002 Wild West Rally is round
9 of 10 for the SCCA PRORally Championship, round 5 of 7 for the
2002 Championship of North America Rallies, and includes the NWR
Sou'Wester and Simpson Stages ClubRallies. Jobs range from
assistance with event setup and other miscellaneous tasks prior to
the event to special stage (racing section) operations. The most
common job is that of Road Marshal. A road marshal is expected to
park their vehicle on a side road which intersects the stage and
ensure that no vehicle enters the race course. Essentially each
road marshal has their own spectator area.

All volunteers will be given Wild West T-shirts and are invited to
the awards banquet following the event, free of charge.

Anyone wishing to volunteer should contact John Nispel at:
chiefofcontrols@juno.com or 360 357-3207 Be sure to include your e-
mail address, phone numbers (home, work & cell), what days you would
be available and your shirt size.

A description of performance rally follows:

What is Performance Rally?
Sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), PERFORMANCE
RALLY is a thrilling and unique form of motor sports. REAL CARS
(street legal production based cars, with roll cages and other
safety requirements) compete in different classes, from Production
(stock) to Open (anything goes). REAL ROADS start on "transits"
(public road sections driven at legal speeds) which link the real
racing on "special stage" roads (timed sections of controlled gravel
roads winding up and down mountain forests). A rally weekend can
traverse 300 miles, including over 130 stage miles. REAL FAST is
the speed of these cars on the special stages, averaging 50-60 mph,
with top speeds reaching over 100 mph on tree lined gravel roads.
Performance Rally is unlike any other form of racing you've seen
before!

Where can I see Performance Rally?
The Wild West Rally will be in Thurston, Mason and Grays Harbor
Counties, centered around Shelton, Washington, "Gateway to the
Olympics", on September 7th and 8th, 2002. Special stages use
Simpson Resource Company's scenic forest roads. For an opportunity
to meet the teams and see the cars up close, attend the exhibition
(parc expose) each morning. And to see the cars racing on stage,
visit the fantastic public spectating locations listed on the back
of this page. One of the best ways to get real close to the action
and learn more about the sport is to help as a corner marshal. These
enthusiastic volunteers receive training and get to watch the event
from some of the best viewing points on the special stages. A rally
requires many volunteers, including medics, ham radio operators,
time control workers, and many others, so please volunteer if you'd
like to help. Learn more about the Northwest Region of the SCCA and
performance rally on-line at: (http://www.nwr-
scca.org/rally/info.html). Visit the official Wild West Web page at
http://www.nwr-scca.org/rally/wildwest.html for updated schedules
and event information.

Thanks all, see you out in the woods!

I'll be there as a volunteer for the Primitive Racing team. The driver is Paul Eklund and the car is a yellow 02 WRX. I encourage everyone in the area to come out. I went last year and had a great time. There's some awesome spectator areas plus you get a chance to meet the drivers.

Later,
