'91 Legacy Sport question

Hey all.
I'm looking at getting a '91-3 Legacy Sport to tinker with and I've found a '91 around here for sale (after a bunch of sold ones...) but I'm not 100% positive I like the '91 front/rear style.
Is there a big difference between the '91 and the '92/93? Would I be able to use the front grill, lights and tailights from a '93? I like the fresher look of the '93.
Thanks,
Patrick

I like the older style, and the simple answer is NO you would not be able to use the changed items. They are a matched set. For example you would need new hood, new fenders just to use the grill and side lights!

Aw man
Well... The '91 isn't so bad... I could strip the chrome and paint it black like boostedjunkie's '91.
What about the tail? That's what I really care about. I like the '93-94 tail sooo much better.

"That's a negative ghost rider, pattern is full."
Also matched set. Tail lamps, fenders, trunk. Of course, you COULD put them on.. it just takes a little extra $$....

Aw man, so I'm stuck with those nasty tails? yick.
Oh well... It's still a sweet car... if I get it that is lol.

I think the 91s also had the advantage of having a rear lsd and 4-channel abs. I'm not sure if the 92-94s had these features.

All sport sedans that i know of have the 4-channel ABS. Rear LSD, only the 91 got.

wasn't the LSD an option on the later legs? I'm sure a rare one, but I thought it was available, I could be wrong however. I too really really want and would sell my soul for later leg taillights on my 91. Are you sure that for the rear everything must be changed? I was looking at my friends next to mine the other day, and Kinda though the maybe just the rear bumper and you could do the lights. Maybe I should try this before I get my car painted...I'd be much happier with its looks.
if you find out any more, share it with us...
thanks

Yeah, I took a look at some picts of a '91 and a '92/93 at to me it looks like the only difference might be the top part of the bumper and maybe the trunk. Otherwise it looks the same. The later tails aren't as tall, and the difference seems to be taken up by the top of the bumper.
I would KILL to have '92/93 lights on the back of the '91. They're SO much prettier.

I agree man, we got to figure out how to do the swap. If I'm getting my car painted, I should definately try to do it. I know I could find a rear bumper and a trunklid and lights prettty easy and cheap, I guess even fenders too if I had to. But thats quite a pain. I've already been thinking about swapping in the side markers from a late leg...my friend totaled his.

Hehe I gotta get mine first
The one we're looking at is burgandy and we're probably going to repaint it... but until then I'm not sure what to do. Probably just spend a few bucks and pick up a set of '92/93/94 tails and see what needs to be done and go from there. I figure they'd be easy to find since they show up on ebay all the time and there's always the junkyard.

The rear quarter panels are the same all years, the hole and mounting brackets for the lights are different though. I looked into this, cause I have both the oringal and facelifted 1st gen Legacy's sitting in my driveway. What you would need is a new rear bumper, lights and trunk. Then you'd have to figure some way to mount the smaller lights into the larger 90-91 holes. and seal the excessivly large holes with primed metal, panel sealant and screws/metal, unless you weld the plates on. then put everything back together.

I also remember reading that early models got 4 channel ABS and later got three channel.

Yeah, take a look at the "Library" section of the legacycentral.org website. It's got all the brochures for every year and makes the differences painfully obvious...
Painful to someone like me who thinks the '91 rear end is yicky.

Yiccky is right! Thats why I'm painting the center bar body color, and the chrome strips on the lights black. If I had the money to get all the needed parts then I'd convert the tail to 92+.

The new rear sedan rear end reminds me of about three other vehicles from the same time period. Ill start taking notes of the model and post it so you can see, basically all of you want a subaru that doesnt look like subaru

Hmm.. I used to own a 87 Acura Legend, and I must admit that the styling cues of the Legacy are very, very similar....

On the other hand, check out late model Corollas. They look almost identical to the 91 Legacies just a bit smaller IMO. I think they are Subies sometimes when I see them.

I think the early 90s Maximas look a lot like the 92-94 Legacies from the rear. A couple times I've mistaken Maximas with spoilers for Sport Sedans from a distance.

Not until recently did
any Japanese car look radically different from another. I am very adept at telling what a car is, my friends have no clue how I do it, but I do agree a 92 Maxima gets me occasionally thinking it's a 92-94 Legacy.
And I will admit, I thought I saw a WRX once and found out it was a Neon...

Yeah....you're right. The 91 got 4-channel, 92-94 got 3 channel.
