ok, here's my problem. i have an automatic and just recently became
aware of a slippage problem that occurs when i'm pulling out in drive
or reverse. it happens in all the gears(i.e. with the drive
selection lever in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or drive and reverse). after i get
moving though it doesn't seem to slip between shifting up or down.
also if i'm sitting on a hill in gear i now have to hold the break on
or i'll coast backwards. the reason i think it may be my driveshaft
is because upon checking it i noticed it had a bit of play in it. is
it supposed to? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in
advance...

It would not be the driveshaft, since the front wheels arent driven by these
wheels, and they always have AT LEAST 50% of the power.

Sounds to me like something is wrong with your TC. Normally I would assume
the transmission is just getting old, the exception is that you say once its
moving everything works fine. At a certain point the speed the TC is
spinning (directly connection to the engine) creates enough friction on the
output fan that the speed difference cant be much more than 250 rpm. At a
stand still the difference can be large, 2000 if you try hard enough.

sounds to me like you have a worn out clutch pack for
the tranny. As for the other posts on here about the
cv boot situation, I did both routs on my old Legacy
turbo. One went, but I caught it befor it had time to
go bad. The boot that I bought and installed was a
pain along with the strap/clamps to hold them on.
After around 8k, it slipped off from the steering
movements. So I changed that and changed the other
side because it also went bad. This time I just bought
the remanufactured ones. They slipped right in and
saved me a lot less time and energy from not having to
clean and repack the CV joints. One thing that is
rarely mentioned is that you need to remember or mark
which side of the holes is which for the pins, since
the holes are tapered. You need to hammer it out from
the small side and back in from the larger side.
