hey for any of u aussies out there which WRX turbo will fit into an
RS? is it expensive to install and will it be complicated to install?

also how much extra power is expected to be gained?

Well, I just isntalled a TD05, 16G froma 1995 WRX STi...direct bolt on.

As for power, no idea to be honest..I also did the top mount air to air IC fromt he same car, as our US Legacy is non intecooled from the factory...still running 10 psi of boost thopugh car is MUCH quicker....hope to be doing the fuel pump and FCD today/tomorrow and will run 1 bar I think daily.

I couldn't get on of those to fit into my car. the cast elbow wouldn't clear
the intake manafold. So I sold it on ebay. I'm about to install a VF23 on my
car and I think I will run into the same problem but this time I have to
make it work any ideas?

mine fit perfectly....exactly the same as a stock turbo fit....cast elbow is ssame diamter, etc as the stock Legacy unit.

The VF23 can be made to work, though it will be a bit custom as it has no 45 degree elbow

Absolutely none. The turbo in the RS is bigger than the turbo in the WRX.

actually the td05 which came on ealier wrx imports are much bigger than the stock Legacy blower

Any of the WRX turbos will fit actually. The physical size of the original Liberty RS turbo, etc might be bigger than the IHI varients used in late model WRX's, but all the IHI units are vastly superior to the older gen. Legacy Turbo/Libert RS units, save maybe for those used in the RS-RA (not sure on what spec turbo it got as standard).

The easiest swap is the TD05 turbo from 93-96 WRX's (not sure if there are differences between teh Sti and non Sti varients). These are substantially bigger, equally as responsive and much stronger units than the OEM Liberty RS/Legacy turbo units. I just did this into my Legacy Turbo, along with the intercooler from the same donor car (1995 WRX Sti Type RA).

All the post 96 WRX turbos from STi and non Sti varients will fit as well. The STi models got the better IHI ball bearing units, and these are defiantely the prefered turbo to use. Some non STi cars might have gotten these IHI units as well...seems that varies by model spec as well as the country the car was intended to be sold in though. With the later IHI units, oil and water lines should be close enough if not direct bolt ons that they shouldn't pose much problem at all. What you will need is a 90 degree silicone or aluminum elbow to come from the turbos inducer to mate up to your stock intake system. If not , a custom intake piping arrangement would be in order.

I am unsure about the piping configuratio of the air-water IC's you got overseas, but the intercooler (air-air) fromt he same year car as your turbo is off of would certainly fit as well with some minor vacuum hose rerouting being required as well as maybe relocating some things originally found on the firewall, to make room for the larger air-air unit.

Let me know what you are looking for in terms of responsiveness, power, etc, and I can help you pick the right turbo, as can many others here.

Hi Adam, can you tell us whether the OEM Liberty RS turbo is a bigger unit than the OEM Leagacy turbo? I think it is, and the TD05 is not much bigger, if at all than the OEM IHI turbo used in the RS. The RS turbo is certainly bigger than the TDO4 usd in later model WRXs. What turbo do you for an RS, which is standard?

Ross - how are you? I don't know much about the Liberty RS model, but what my own searches have come up with is this:

The turbo used in the USDM Legacy turbo and the OZ/Japan spec Liuberty RS is the same....one of 2 IHI units were used. My understanding is the difference is that the USDM Legacy has a 90 degree elbow on the compressor, the Liberty RS does not (due to the air/water IC). Both of these IHI units are a tad smaller (outer diameter) than the TD05 of the early WRX's, but the internals are vastly different. The TD05 turbo in the WRX is a 16G internally, which is equivalent in size to what the Lancer Evo's come with (though they use much more exotic materials and later ones have a twin scroll inlet). In any event, these are very relioable turbos and havea wide efficiency range.

What I am really trying to find now is some solid information on the Legacy RS-RA which seems to be the rarest version of the BC5 chassis. If anyone does have such info, please share!!!!

Incorrect, the japanese engines were given three different sizes of
turbos and they all had the 90 degree bend.

A look at Mark Wards canadian Legacy can show you this. He purchased
an EJ20 from a 1st gen legacy to bring his car up to Group N
standards. He had the choice of the three turbos, all which included
said pain-in-the-butt 90 degree elbow. The purchase also included the
water to air intercooler.

Do any of you guys have specs on the different turbos which RSs came
out with in Australia and different diff ratios? I have been in a couple of Marroon RS
sedans which seem to spool up quicker than my white one and also sit on lower
revs at a given speed. But these cars would struggle to hold 60km/h in 4th.
Any ideas anyone?

The RS use 3.54 diffs at the rear and 3.9 on the front. They use a
1.1 :1 center diff stepper , this gives them mostly front wheel drive , if you X
3.54 X 1.1 = 3.9
At 120km/h it should be doing 3000rpm in 5th. The RS's RHB52 turbo is just
a frame size reference and comes in a miriad of trims that make it behave
completely differently between one trim to the other. The VF numbers are
the trim sizes. The VF14 may compare to the TD05 but my VF12 equipped
92 is much less laggy than my friends 94 Rex with a TD05(about 1000rpm
later and neck snapping ).
All the RS Liberty's came with IHI RHB52 turbo's, though I am lead
to believe that the earlier cars had the bigger turbo........that have the 20r
exhaust housing......I think the latter ones may off had a 18r .....I have seen
a few imports with the 18r turbo on them. Check and see what is stamped
on your turbo compared to the others.

was a March 92, Definitely, the other a June 92 (I think). Cant read
mine, the shield covers it! Is yours 18r or 20r?

....lag is nowhere near as bad as it was prior to fitting the exhaust and
freeing up the air intake. The car is happy to cruise in fourth, no problem
but put your foot down when the revs are under 2300rpm and pick-up is slow..
From 2500rpm it pulls fine in fourth, actually put your foot down in 4th @
2500 and I have an instant 6psi of boost.
Next time for interests sake, check what the markings are on your turbo,
my has a 20R and VF12 stamped on it. Another guy has an RS that is 5/92
model and is the same.

Looked at my boost guage today on the freeway and yes it has full boost at
140km/h whan you tramp it. Crusing though it has about 10vac. The boost is
instant.

For reference I'll check my turbo out today/tomorrow (1991 model, 2/91 build date, US spec) and let you know what it had on it.

Seems the IHI units have not changed too significantly over the years. What was the 18r and 20r exhaust housings is now the P18 and P20, as found on later model VF's. I would guess the RA model comes with a turbo designed for quick spool, just as it is on the RA versions of the WRX. And just like WRX's, I would suspect that the turbos in later versions are slightly different than those in the earlier models. For reference sake, it would be nice to compile a chart of the versions and turbos that the cars came with based on build date, model year, what have you.

If anyone would like a TD05/16g off of a WRX I have one I would part
with. It is in very good condition. Also I have copies of part of a
book from WARNER-ISHI that gives the specs on a lot of IHI turbo's.
I really don't know about posting it but if someone wants any
specific info I will see what I can find in it.
