Pod filter in the guard

Should I mount my pod filter in the guard where the factory resonant box is? It must flow better than an exposed pod under the bonnet or a big duct to the factory air box.

Like what APS do with the later WRX's

Anyone tried this? got pics?

Yeah,

I would probably mount it in there. Cooler air.

Only issue would be water......but asl long as you don't drive through lots of standing water.....you should be ok.

I can't say I did anything other than look at the pictures of the APS intake and our engine bay and intake, but it kinda looks like that APS intake for the later wrx could be damn close to dropping in our car....and working pretty well. I'm sure one would have to play with it a little...but it looks like it even has a curve in it that would avoid the boost solenoid and stuff on the strut tower...But do we have a smaller hole going through to the fender? And would its location work...hmm...I don't know, foor for thought.

Well, one difference between the WRX turbo and our own is that the compressor inlet is straight on with the WRX, while ours has a 90 degree elbow on the inlet. That intake seems to fit the straight inlet. If that's the case we could just unbolt the 90 degree elbow though.

I never knew that the APS intake actually eliminated the MAF sensor housing! It looks like you mount the MAF sensor element straight into the intake. That's pretty cool! I guess that's why it needs the Unichip, though, to recalibrate for the different relationship between airflow and MAF reading.

The MAF sensors between the WRX and our cars are different. I believe they mount the MAF in the new intake. You can't do that with ours.

I haven't disassembled the plastic-housing MAF sensor, but the turbo sensors definitely come apart; the sensor unit itself looks almost exactly like the WRX unit pictured in the APS diagrams. The whole aluminum housing is essentially just the part of the intake that the sensor mounts to.

If the diameter of the tube is not the same, you'll have issues.

i am confused about how the intake on a wrx works. does it go under the intake manifold? how doe sit get to the turbo?

Josh -- The different diameter and whatnot is probably why APS says their intake requires a Unichip.

Subiekid -- I think you have it right. From what I can tell, the airbox is more or less in the same place as ours, but the MAF sensor (and tubing going from it) goes off to the front driver's side rather than up. Then the tubing goes under the two passenger side intake manifold runners into the turbo's compressor inlet.

wow, i thought i was just going crazy. it seems to me that the intake would take in most heat that way. it would be right on the block but it would be a much strighter path.

If you lot read my post I said it was for the later model WRX.

Our cars have the 90deg elbow like the early WRX's (JDM ones). This elbow isn't as restrictive as you may think it is.

I ended up mounting my K&N pod into the guard and it has made a huge difference.

On another note, does anyone know how to get the notifications to work properly on this forum?

any chance you could hook us up with some picts of your setup and some info on it? I want to put a pod in the fender but am unsure how to set it up, deal with the MAF and such...much thanks

I only have this pic when I had the filter in a cold air box.

Image

All I did was make a pipe going from the MAF into the guard which my filter hose clamps to, like the APS unit.

Wow, cool setup! Any noticable gains from it?

Sorry guys, everything is custom made.

The only factory parts is the pipe coming off the turbo and the MAF.

With my previous cold air box setup (pictured above), it went pretty well. But after seeing the APS setup and setting my car up like that, she has that much more low-mid range power its not funny.

People say that by having my Pod in the guard they think that it will soak in water and junk like that. What a load of rubbish is all I have to say, it is heading into winter here and it has been pouring down for the last few weeks and I have had absolutely no probs (except for traction :P).

I agree, the hazard is not nearly as bad as it is made to sound. I just went through about 3-4 inches of standing water @ around 30mph (couldn't see it at night) plumes of water everywhere, but no problems. My filter is visible through the front bumper.

Nice man.

I think most ppl that rave on about that rubbish have probably not done it.

My filter I would say is "invisible" :D Hidden in the guard nicely and all my piping is black under the engine bay so I don't get hassled by the police.

i just want the metal bend. not the pod or any of that stuff, i just need the metal elbow that goes from the air filter to the rubber elbow,

So you need two parts then, the turbo elbow-maf part I can do, the maf-k&n is custom as I have a 4" girth pod filter which is about 250mm large.

what year is your car? you have a plastic maf sensor. is your car an auto? maybe after 92 the autos got a plastic maf. i have a 92 and it had an aluminum maf sensor.

so you can get me one of these?

i thoguht you said these are for the older wrx. non usdm. once i have this i can custom fab the rest

This is my set up. i had to use this because i did a transplant and the airbox would not bolt up.

I can get that part for you if you want.

You probably couldn't fit the airbox as your car is the later model Legacy which got the twin turbo engine in Japan.

how much? i can make a pod. i have access to a metal bender, cutter, and welder.

did you have to mess with any thing since you removed the big black box?

heres the thing...everyone here is going to want one! I know I sure do...
what to make some $? You could setup a group buy...
Doesn't MRT make a black peice for this?
thanks

i am kinda thinking it will not fit. my reason for saying this is because the usdm cars had that black box with a few lines going to it. this intake would not alow those things (what everthey may be) to function. this intake is for non usdm.
