Turbo Help! please

Alright guys… I'm pretty upset here. I bought what was supposed to
be a stock legacy turbo… I think its supposed to be a RHB5 but I was
sent a TD04L it looks smaller from what I can see… I'm not sure. Is
this any better then what I've got on my stock sport sedan? I'm
pretty upset… not only is it the wrong turbo but I dog could have
packaged it better than this guy.

So is the td04 better then the rhb5? Is it an easy
swap?

The TD04 is actually the stock WRX turbo. If it is
from a 2002 model it can be a huge pain to swap into
the Legacy. If it is the older model (which I'm not
sure if it is TD04 in older WRXs or not, I'm sureone
will let us know though) it could be swapped
relatively easily I believe. The good news (depending
on your purchase price) is that the TD04s generally
catch higher dollar number than the RHB5s on ebay if
you decide to resell it and get an actual RHB5.

Ok so how do I know if its an older model or not? I'll try to get some
pics tonight after work. What kind of boost can I run with this thing? I
had planned on getting an older wrx intercooler (already have a seller)
will that still work with this?

Below are links to the turbo I was trying to describe earlier. Does
anyone know if this came from a wrx? New age or old? Is this an easy
enough swap into a legacy turbo? Also if you notice in the last link
there are Styrofoam peanuts all over and inside the turbo... what's the
best way to get that out?

Apparently the person I bought it from said he bought this from JC
sports and he was told it was a legacy turbo???

Try compressed air to blow out the peanuts. Dan

Looks pretty small - could well be a TD04 from a WRX 97/98 or later. You'll have to bodge a right angle onto the intake because they changed the inlet path to go under the intake manifold (different manifold used in later cars). Legacies use a 90 bend attached straight onto the compressor housing. These spool up a bit faster than the stock Legacy/Liberty turbo but are only good for 1bar pressure tops. For serious power and lower intake temps you should look for a TD05 - which also comes from a WRX but earlier than 98.
