Hi, all

It's time make the Check Engine Light go out.

I ran the ecu in on-road diagnostic mode and got a 35 error code, 'the cpv'. No problem. Found out where it's located. Big Problem.

The Chilton's tells a tale of pulling the intake manifold, which I'd rather not do. The cables are too short to (gasp) duct tape/sheet metal screw another solenoid somewhere in the engine compartment. And it's buried very deep under the cascades of the intake manifold. It is not going to be easy.

Is this as big a hassle as it looks?

kind of....

I was finally able to get it all squared away with a racheting wrench and a small set of hands. The other problem I had while fixing it was that the tiny little vacuum hose that looks like a "C" cracked while trying to put the aforementioned hose back on the nipple of the valve. That truly sucked. I got my wife to reach in there with her smallish hands and put everything back in order. Good luck!

its easy on a n/a--we were just talking about it somewhere on here. its just one 10mm and two hoses and a connector. u can get at it with a 1/4 rachet with a extension.

Oh yeah, I didn't even realize it was N/A. Should be much easier.

Thanks for the replies!

It sounds like the infamous blind bolt you get to from the rear, I'll grab a mirror and flashlight and go for it. Good thing I dug out my 1/4" extensions the other day..

I'll take some pix while I'm doing it, too.. any recommendations for a place to put them (ie, picture server)?

Nevermind about the picture server, the probelm's 'fixed'..

I called around the local parts houses, and this little solenoid is officially rare, only the dealer carries it and they're asking over $300. So, after measuring the coil and finding it open (which looks like it's the only thing the ecu detects), I went to Radio Shack, bought a 5-pack of 1 kohm, 1/4 watt resistors, stuffed one across the pins in the harness side connector and taped it up. Connected the green connectors, started the car and the error code had disappeared (got the regular 'ok' flash). I turned off the car, disconnected the jacks, restarted the car and took it out for a 45-plus test drive.

No more light!

Of course, this is a temporary fix, illegal and all that... but I'd rather the light go out and spend the other $299 on a date.

This is NOT a rare part. You can order one from Subaruparts.com for ~$60. That's where I got mine. If you need a part number, it's on one of the stickies IIRC.
