My dad has a legacy 2.2 1994 and it overheated a week or so ago. He took it into the garrage, and now they have tried everything. They first of all replaced the thermostat, then checked water pump, then changed radiator. None of these worked and now they have changed the head gaskets. It ran fine for twenty miles or so on coolant, and now its been replaced with antifreeze, but it boiled that and it overheated agian. Its costing a bloody fortune. Have you guys any ideas?

Im not too good with cars, so excuse if I get the jargon wrong.

Assuming all the componants are good, more then likely there is still air in the system. There is a bleed screw on the passenger side of the radiator. You need to remove that to get all the air out of the cooling system. Without doing this, you will have air in the system and overheat.

If you are sure that all the air is out of the system, i would go so far as to say that you may have a crack in one or both heads and/or the block. only way to tell that is to take them back off and examine them.

I would first re-bleed the system (assuming that the shop you took it to bled it the first time)....if that doesn't work, you may have to take the heads back off to try and find what is wrong. And that is, as Legacy777 said, assuming that all other components are good.

Is it only overheating at idle, or does it overheat even when driven at a steady speed on the highway? Are the radiator fans working? Does the car have A/C? The condensor could be so beaten up that there is poor air flow to the rad.
