Maybe you would consider making them clear and then putting amber bulbs in. That way you wouldn't have the incongruous orange but you'd still have the safety advantage of amber turn signals.
If you want to have the real clear look, you could use Philips SilverVision bulbs, which look silver when off and amber when on.
I do believe the orange part of the lens just snaps off, or is easily broken off, from the inside.

I painted my tails with krylon "stained glass" spray paint. When you have your turn signals on or hazards, you cannot tell that they were painted. Just clean your tails really well, and shoot em with 2 or 3 thin coats of the paint. Just make sure you leave a little part that's white, so you dont get pulled over for no reverse lights

I think you may run into a legal issue with having red blinkers. I know my local law enforcement office does not look too highly on red flashing lights unless its theirs.

Orange is typical. Maybe i'm just not looking for the red ones, maybe it's cuz i'm tired today.

Tons of american car have red blinkers. They use the same lights as the brake lights. So when they hit their brakes and blinker at the same time they do all kinds of weird stuff.

Yeah, many American cars and a few foreign cars have red turn signals in the rear. I don't understand why European automakers (like Audi) would do it... aside from the obvious safety disadvantage, they still have to make amber ones for non-North-American markets.

yeah i find it funny that audi does that to its us market cars. my friend has one and he has all the euro goodies like rear fog lamps, headlamp washers, etc and yet the red signals on the rear. atleast its a seperate bulb.
i still cant believe its legal to have one bulb function for lights/brake lights/and turn signal as many american cars do. hey its legal so lets do it!!

US Federal automotive lighting regulations are ridiculously behind the times. Witness the locations of turn signals on so many GM cars (almost at the center of the front of the car, and completely invisible from the side), the shared turn/brake filaments you speak of, the beam patterns of headlamps like those on mid-90s Chryslers, highbeam-based daytime running lights... I could go on.
Subaru's not free of guilt; the 90-91 Legacies have pretty crappy lighting on the front end.
