Guys,
There is a 1993 Subaru Legacy Turbo for sale by my house. It has 143k miles on it and the interior and exterior are VERY clean. The guy is asking $2,200 or bo for the car. The only prob is that the car has an auto transmission (w/ manual diff lock). I can't stand driving automatics! But is this car worth the money even though it has the auto? Is it a car that is fun to drive anyway? The guy said the car is awesome in the snow and fast. Are these cars at the end of their life at 143k? or are the auto transmissions weak?Let me know your opinions. Thanks

I just bought my '94 last week with 90k mi. Because the EJ22-T was so detuned for the states 160hp) unless the oil has been run dry that car has plenty of life left. That is the strongest block Subaru ever built in that car.
And the auto tranny is plenty strong as well. You could build that car up to nearly 300hp before you would need to address the tranny, again assuming it has been properly serviced. And the price is a good price. If you bluebook is I imagine you will find it is close to $1000 below market. If you are looking for a fun project, snatch it up. If not, post the contact info and I am sure a buyer could be found right here pretty quickly...

Could the EJ22T really be that "detuned" for the states if it was never even sold in any other country?
I'm just bustin your balls...its been one of those days. It does seem that if they did release it in other countries (which they didn't) it would probably have included a IC, 440cc injectors, maybe quad cams....why oh why must you always shaft us americans, o holy subaru gods!?!?!

Micum,
I am tempted to give a scathing reply, but you obviously knew what I meant...

And personally, I can't wait to "retune" that sucker to the realm of power found in the 22B.

I had an auto legacy turbo. it was killer. I loved it. Even more than my brand new Impreza. the auto version isn't THAT much slower than the stick version. and when built up, it'll be plenty fast. Autos only suck for cars like hondas with no torque. Torque converters need an engine with enough torque to turn them. the EJ22t has that much torque. 180 lbft is plenty. put on an exhaust and a few bolt-ons and you'll be around 200 lbft.
stock, the car will hit stall speed at 3500 RPMs. at least it did in my car. I didn't launch like that too often, but when I did it brought a smile to my face. all 4 chirp and you're on your way to 60 quick like a bunny.

BTW, does anyone know the production numbers on the Legacy turbo?

Argggh. Sore subject... make up a number and you can argue about it until blue in the face.
But they are really really rare in mass production car terms. I'd say there were no more than a couple thousand of the 5-speeds made (if there were more than 1000...)
