I was checking things out under my '94 Turbo, and I discovered that there is a serious amount of play where the inner CV joint mounts to the transmission. There's no rotational play (yet!), but I can rock the CV joint up and down, side to side and in and out on the transmission stub shafts. The hole that the roll pin goes through to lock the CV joint to the shaft seems to have opened up quite a bit in the shaft. I looked at the stub shaft, and it's not visibly worn. I thought maybe it was the CV joint, so I replaced the axles with rebuilt units but that didn't help.

Has anyone else experienced this? I had a quick look through the archives, and I didn't see anything. I can't figure out how it's happened. And how I'm going to repair it short of replacing the trany is a big

Not knowing how much play you saw I think its normal.

The in out play is because the only part hold the stub in place is a spring wire circlip. This goes into the differential gears which also have alot of play. The hole it passes through on the transmission housing is surrounded but a flexible rubber seal that has quite a bit of play too. Remember the differential isnt under pressure and the fluid is very thick.

I think you may be thinking of the later model subaru's where there is a splined shaft at the end of the inner CV joint that slips into the trany? On mine, there is a short, splined shaft that sticks out from the trany. The inner CV joint slips over that, and a roll pin is hammered through the joint and shaft to lock them together. Or can that stub shaft be poped out of the transmission? That shaft does not appear to be moving when I rock the CV joint arround.

I'd be very happy to find out it's normal, but it just doesn't seem right to me. It's too bad that the Haynes manual wimped out on the 5 spd trany repair section. My Haynes manual for my Datsun has complete trany rebuild instructions, and I've rebuilt a few.
