Hi guys,

A few weeks ago I noticed my headlights were dim at night. After inspection I noticed my low-beams were not turning on. When I turn my lights on they are the same intensity as my daytime running lights. My daytime running lights work properly, as well as my high beams.

My first thought was that maybe the low beam filament (in the bulb)was broken, so I bought a new pair of headlights. I had the same problem. Then I decided to check the fuses (should have done first), but they were fine. I then noticed there was a relay for each headlight. Since currently I own 2 1992 turbos (1-auto,1-standard,the standard is the car with no low beams) , I simply switched the relays from my automatic (the headlights are fine on the automatic). The low-beams still didn't work. So now I'm stumped, and decided to confide in the very knowledgeable members of this forum for aide.

Has anyone had or heard of this problem ?

Anyone have any suggestions or advice?

Did your car come from the factory with daytime running lights? What filaments are used for the DRLs?

This I don't know absolute certainty. The fisrt letter of the VIN is a J so it was manufactured in Japan. But I'm pretty sure any car sold in Canada (in 1992) must have daytime running lights. It wasn't always like this, but it has for been for a while.

Do the DRLs burn the high beam or low beam filaments?

I dont know. I have a Haynes manual (woohoo), Ill check in there and see If it says or not.

Actually, I just looked through the service manual and found the info... It does burn the low beam filaments, just through big resistors.

I think you should try swapping the DRL relays between your two cars. It's located behind the right kick panel. This relay switches the low beams between normal and dim. If it's not actuating properly, or if it's stuck, it could result in the symptoms you describe.

Just thought I'd add this. I was thinking it could be the actual switch (lever on steering wheel). But all of the interior display lights up when the low beams should be on.
