Help?

I found a company dealing with Subaru engines. I asked for any ej22t. The guy said "yup we've got two of them. One 34k and 38K on it. He said they import them from Japan? What??? I thought this engines are USDM only?

I think he was confused. Any knowledgeable person please let me know. He want $1000 for it. I know where to get the ECU and wiring harness. So....

The only EJ22T from Japan was in the Impreza 22B; a rare collectible car they only made about 400 of. It's highly unlikely he'd have two engines form them and I'm sure they'd be more money than that anyway. Either they're EJ20's and he's mistaken or they're not imports. Ask if it has SOHC or DOHC. The 22B was the only EJ22T with DOHC and the USDM EJ22T had the SOHC. If you're located near me, I could get you a USDM EJ22T for around $500, but with no turbo and 108K mi. I just paid $750 for one with the turbo and 86K, so in line with those prices and low miles I'd say $1000 is a USDM EJ22T.

Yeah,

34,000 miles? That's barely broken in for a subaru. ej22t with 34k sounds like too good to be true. So, I think it is.

It's common to see engines "imported from Japan" for sale that aren't what they say they are. It's not always clear whether the importer or the original source is the one trying to cheat people.

Like Steve said, this engine isn't what the guy says it is. Whenever considering any used engine purchase be very careful to make sure you know what you're buying.

A good place to buy?

Okay then...

Can people reputable places to buy used engines? Who have you dealt with?

With only 688 of turbo legacies in this country, how many used engines are out there?

This makes me think about forgetting the entire ej22t swap and just go for an STi EJ20 ver 1-4.

I can sell an ej22t with turbo and ecu and harness in the spring, A little high on the miles at 150k, but nothing that a little love won't hurt.

:)

Any time they release a car they always make more engines than cars to be able to service repairs. Flat4Engineering (the parts Department of Mike Shaw Subaru) lists brand new EJ22-T shortblocks on their site for $1450. There are a lot more of these engines than there are cars.
If you want to find out more about those "Japanese" engines, get the specs numbers and serial number from the guy and post them here. Then we can tell you what you really are looking at. Correct me if I am wrong, but weren't the USDM Turbo Legacies from a time before Subaru had a factory from the states? Those engine would still be Japanese made and imported if that was the case, even if they were slated for USDM cars. Who really knows how they got there, but the prices aren't too bad for them.

My point of view :

1 - It's not because you sell shoes that you're a shoe-maker or shoe expert.. ;) (does this sounds good in english ? :) )

2 - There is a big "Hype" over the JDM parts and engines these times....

draw your own conclusion ;)

What's in a short block?

A short block consists of the bottom end. The pistons, rods, crank are all there, all bolts are tight to proper clearances, etc etc. There are NO: heads, pulleys, sprockets, hoses, oil pan, or pretty much anything that bolts on outside...

Just to clarify, all of the turbo Legacy's were made in Japan AFAIK. The NA Legacy's began production here in 1989. Actually, on Sept. 11 1989 alongside Isuzu pickups and Rodeos in Lafayette, Indiana.

The 22B engine....was that any better than ours? I it produced more power, but that is because of tuning. Were the heads any better? The block wasn't the exact same block we have, from what I understand, right? It wasn't a completly closed deck.

Apparently the block was the same as ours. The heads were the main thing. They were DOHC gnarly heads and ours were the SOHC pusses. There was another thread about these same issues a while ago.

Ah that sounds familiar. I remember reading the thread but forgot what was in it. It would be nice to get a hold of those heads. I wonder if they increase our CR?

If you want to immerse yourself in EJ22T info, read the stickied thread at the top of this forum... :)

I would imagine the DOHC EJ22T heads that the 22B got are probably very similar to JDM EJ20T heads, if not identical to them. I don't think Subaru would design completely new heads just for a 400-car production run...
