Well the L is your base model, I don't know exactly what it didn't have as compared to the others, but the L didn't have a sunroof, and it may not have had AC, not sure on that one.
The LS is the next model up, it my have had a sunroof, not sure.
The LSI sometimes had leather and the extra little goodies like abs I believe.
The turbo was in its own class all itself, and it had it's own seats also. They weren't leather though.

If you want EXACT details, look in the Library section on the parent website (
http://legacycentral.org ). I've scanned in a number of manuals for most of the 1G Legacies.

basically:
L-bottom line, no A/C, 5spd, no power windows/locks, 14 steel wheels.
L-with value option 2, A/C, power windows/locks, 80 watt AM/FM cassette, cruise control
LS - L value option 2 plus: moonroof, 4EAT, ABS,CD player all standard.
LSi - all above, plus: leather and interior accents.

Nuh-uh, sorry Mark...
First off, any model line could be auto or 5spd...
The base model is the Standard, no power, no 4WD, the only options were auto and A/C and radio, I think. Don't have the brochure in front of me...
The L got all the power stuff; A/C, cruise, and 80W stereo were the value package, 4WD was optional on all 1st-gen Legs... ABS on 4WD auto only...
The LS got more goodies like sunroof and other stuff, and I only have the 1990 brochure, when there was no LSi...
So, the L was more the middle model, the Standard was base...

I think you both may be partially right. You had the three choices of model. I think the base was still an L
L
Lowest was 2wd with no options and even manual windows (other items as well)
Available with some random "packages" and items that could be added. The most popular package was awd, automatic, cruise, ac power windows
LS
Always had at least a 5 speed awd. Always AC, Power
Options and packages could be added, like addition of abs, height adjust with automatic transmission etc
LSI
Like an extended LS, sunroof and ABS along with leather interior.
Sure I didnt list all of them, but as far as I know only the LSI got the automatic as standard, all others had it as an option (not counting turbos)

They made a base model below L when they first appeared, don't know what it was called, but it was a fwd 1.8 with unpainted bumpers and black trim for the taillights. I never saw one in the newer bodystyle and have seen only a few of these anyway.
I thought all LS were autos. I have a later brochure around somewhere...

Sorry subyluvr2212, I just got my info out of a 94 brochure
First off, any model line could be auto or 5spd
Auto wasn't standard in the L trim model, 5-spd was. Thats where I'm getting at, you could get it as an option, but only became standard on the LS.

Argh, there was a bottom line Legacy at my work the other week. A baby blue wagon with black bumpers and bottom line trim, But... It was auto. I forgot to check out the badging. Anyone know what they were labeled as? STD? or was that the label given to the older 80's gen bottom liners?

I don't remember seeing any designation on the base model. The wagon I saw had a black strip where the red reflective strip is between the taillights and I don't think it had anything on it but Subaru and Legacy. Maybe autos were an option. A Sube mechanic told me they were 1.8's, though and that they suck because they couldn't get out of their own way. I don't doubt it. Must be why you don't see many and why they likely dropped it.

No way the EJ18 (I think it was called ) only appered in early L model Imprezzas. The base model Legacys were only avalible in 89 and 90, they dropped them the year they came out with the Turbo. The base Legacys did come with manual everything a 2.2L and no AC. I imagine you could get them with either a manual or auto but probly not AWD. They also had just an AM FM radio but they had a larger under radio tray that would be perfect for single DIN radios. 14in steel wheels no hubcaps.
The L's came with all the power stuff and AC, A tapedeck, and either Auto or 5speed FWD or AWD. 14in steal wheels w/hubcaps
The LS's added fuzzy roof, vizor, and piller trim, entry lights in the doors, ABS with the auto trans, no ABS with the 5 speed ( my wagons an LS with 5speed) I think all came with AWD and sun roof. 14inch aluminum wheels.
I'm not sure about the LSi's but I know they added auto climate control and a CD player. I'm not sure about the leather, I didn't think Subaru offered leather in Legacys until 95. I would imagin that all LSi's came with AWD autos and ABS.
As the years went on they added a few odd variations, like the GT, Alpine sport, and Sun sport.

I'm sure the dealer mechanic was wrong.

Thats totally backwards to my LSI
It has Leather, standard climate control and the 80 watt stereo/tape.
"I would imagin that all LSi's came with AWD autos and ABS. "
I think thats right, mine matches.

I was thinking of mainly the 89 to 91 models. I just found an assesory catalog for thoes models and it dosn't even list an LSi, I guess they didn't make them yet. There is also a picture of the auto climate control but does not list it as an option on any car.

I have noticed a few little differences between the different trim packages, one being that the LS and LSi package came with an automatic radio antenna, while the L didn't. I have also noticed a slight differences in the seat padding, or it could also just be a model year thing, and yes I know, the turbo models have the different seats with larger side bolstering...
BTW, I believe that the base models were called the Brightons, but kelly blue book lists them as just 'Sedan 4D'???

when i compared the 91 turbo seats to my 90 ls seats they looked identical, aside from the fabric, are you sure turbos have have diff seats?

I know that on my car, the seats are much firmer, and have much better side bolstering. My car is a 1993, and I am comparing this to my friends 1993 LS model and my brothers 1990 L model. I know that my friends LS seems to have slightly more padding than my brother's L...

You need to make sure you car comparing Japan built to American built. When looking at a legacy thats the first thing I check. I MUCH rather prefer the Japan models.

My car was built in Japan, and my friends is American made, I am not really sure where my brothers was made...

Mine's Japan built and my sister's was USA built. The Japan do seem a little better built and there are little detail differences. I know they use different seat belts too as my sister had trouble replacing hers.

no AWD and crappy steel wheels
