Yet another Turbo thread - 16G Q's for the experts

hey guys

new to this forum, but not to subarus...

i have an 87 XT Turbo that now has a VF11 on it and an IC...timing issues are being sorted out, but from what ive seen and read - 15PSI from this unit wouldnt be a problem. the stock unit from an EA82T engine which some of you might be familiar with, is a joke. it runs out of breath at 14PSI and sells the engines very short, as if they need help doing that with all of the other issues they had. i estimate that with proper timing, the XT will be in the low 14s with the VF11...

since ive started lurking around here, ive been seeing the rise in interest of the Mitsu 16G turbos. since i already have a VF11 with WRX turbo back exhaust, jumping up another notch to the 16G wouldnt be much more of a problem than any of you have experienced.

my questions are:

does anyone have any real world track numbers with the VF11 and 16G? what Mistus were these units on? does this turbo provide a big and noticeable jump in performance? will it help me eat SRTs? (joke) are the up AND downpipe flanges the same as a VF11?

and if anyone has any thoughts on the 16G being bolted on to an EA82T, please share...especially one with the mods listed below

-Ford Tbird IC (may go to a WRX model)
-.050 over bore
-polished and port matched heads and intake
-port matched exhaust ports
-VF11 (as of this 30 seconds)
-K and N, WRX stock 2 converter exhaust minus the muffler
-Volvo BPV
-TXS MBC

thanx guys...

The 16G referred to here was found on the 93-96 WRX. A member here has a 16G on his Legacy and is running mid 14's.

Hmmm, it's a 1.8L, correct? What's the effective displacement after the overbore? I can vouch for the increased power from a 16g. Thanksgiving weekend, vrg3 and I went for a drive in my car. It's been acting up lately and I think it's a dog. But when we got in and I took him for a ride, he commented on how fast my car was compared to his. When my car was working well, it was ALOT faster than that, too.

I believe the 16g's have been known to put out around 350hp (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm wondering what spool up on that engine. I know the ej20s don't really start hittin until 4000rpm.

Another problem is finding them. The 16gs we're all talkin about come from the early wrx/stis. They are seemingly harder to come by these days. The 16gs for the dsms use different exhaust flanges and have a different turbo inlet than the subie ones, as well.

the car in question can be seen hereif anyone is interested...just click on 1987 XT Turbo

as for the turbocharger...i may have an in who can get me one, but im in no hurry.

nobody has track times with the VF11? any dyno numbers from an EJ22T with the stock turbo? or a USDM WRX turbocharger?

as for the overbore Q, im not exactly sure...

The dyno time has taken a back seat till whenever I can get the car up and running strong again:(

EJ22T times?

I can't provide you with 1/4 mile times, but my best 0-60 was something like 6-7 seconds. It's a hurtin unit right now though, with some valve noise coming from the right bank of cylinders. Not sure what it is yet, but should have a better idea after a compression check. (It's too cold out there for that right now). Anybody know if EJ22 and EJ22T heads are at all similiar? I suspect that there are differences but if my valve seats are really cooked getting a new head might be difficult.

Hey Dennis, welcome! I like the East Coast Shootout rain drag pictures  I still have a couple pics of your XT-T at the preparty at W&L. Great car man :D

I don't know too much about the 16G other then what i've read here so I can't really contribute much but besides having to change the intake plumbing you'll also have to rerun the oil lines for the 16G (not a big deal). You may want to also double check if the compressor outlet will conflict with your intake manifold. IIRC it's at a 90 degree not a 45 degree like the VF11. Boostjunkie can you confirm or correct? I thought also that the 93-96 wrx-sti 16G from say N.Z., would bolt right up to the up and down pipes. This isn't correct?

I believe there are some 1/4 mile times floating around the site for the VF11. Do a search in the Motorsports and Misc. forums for 1/4 mile times. I think "K" was running a VF11 with a Liberty RS air/water tmic and posted a couple times. =)

One thing to think about, my 1/4 time stayed the same when I first put on the 16G at the same boost...~12. Honestly, I don't think this turbo has started producing any real numbers at this boost. Once I put it up to ~16, I dropped about a second. It is hard to judge though because I had other small problems such as boost leaks and such. I could possibly still have had a leak with the 14.4, who knows.

One major thing I did notice was that with the VF11 and stock exhaust, boost would start at 12psi and whither down to about 7psi at 6500 rpms. The 16G would hold boost all the way up. That is until now. The boost goes down to about 12 psi at 6500rpms. I blame it on the stock downpipe.

The early section of that thread has a little blurb about similarities between NA and Turbo EJ22 heads. Also, last week there was a guy from LV selling some brand new EJ22-T head cores(no cams or valves) on NASIOC private sale classifieds for $200 if you wanted a clean start...Also, you can buy rebuilt heads through subaruparts.com, you just need to install your own cams...
