Will 17" wheels fit with stock diameter tires and a 2" drop?

Offset is important. If the offset is correct you can drop it pretty far.

I have a 2 inch drop in the rear.
225/45/17 michelin pilot sports fit fine with my 17x7 53 offset wheels.
but 225/45/17 kumho v700's on 17x7.5 48 offset (rota subzero's) rub on the inner fender.

Hmmm. . . well, if 215mm tires are used, there shouldn't be really any rubbing then. . . so long as the offset of the wheel is correct.
Kelly. . .. what year Legacy do you have? Because the stock diameter on Laurel's 91 wagon would be the equivalent to a 215/40-17. I'm guessing you've got a newer car with a larger stock setup, right?

I had minor rubbing issues with my 205/45/17 on 17x7.4 w/ 48mm offest and a 2.5-3" drop all around. After i rolled the rear fenders there are no issues at all whatsoever.
W/o rolling, the stock tires 185/70?/14 have no rubbing at all.
It seems that it is mostly trial and error, some suspensions, even the exact same stock one may have rubbing, or may not.

48mm offest was your problem.
Its not because some suspension are different, its that the offset and model/brand of tire is important. When you have tight clearances some tires will where others wont because of different nubs on the corners.
