Wheel & Tire Upgrade Question for 92 Turbo Wagon

I've been wanting to upgrade the wheels & tires (15" and 195/60-15) on my 92 Turbo Wagon, but I'm not quite sure what will work. Answers to my following questions will help me out:
1) I'm looking at purchasing 16" wheels, but will those that are 7" wide fit, and what's should the offset be? I've heard that stock WRX wheels (16x6.5) will work very handsomely, but unfortunately they are too expensive if purchased brand new at the dealer, and good used ones are hard to find.
2) As for the tires, I've heard that 205/55-16 will work, but will the wheelwells have enough room for 215/50-16s?
My first attempt at this upgrade was a disaster since the tires' (205/55-16) sidewalls were rubbing against the shocks and fenders while driving the car with moderate to heavy loads and/or over bumps and semi-fast cornering. I'm betting that this was caused by the 16x7.5 wheels. I can upgrade to a 17" wheel/tire combination, but I feel that there are too little choices for 205/45-17 tires that I can use with my car (which is still driven almost daily, sometimes with kids). Your responses will be greatly appreicated. 'Thanks in advance.
