Hello, I dont know where to put this topic but it seems like a drivetrain problem. I have a 1990 Legacy S/W 4WD, and everytime I make a full turn either left or right, the car starts to "stutter"...meaning it feels like its going to stall.

The speedometer quit working awhile ago, but even when it was working we had this problem when I make U turns and full left right turn.

Anybody know what could cause this problem?

Do a search on the board for "torque bind"

or on www.legacycentral.org in the library section you'll find some info.

thank you very much for that link...

Is that rear differential only available through Subaru dealerships or can my personal mechanic obtain the same from a different source?

It would probably be the same price just to get a later transmission that already has the fix done to it.

I know for sure that anything pre 97 will work and fairly sure any phase 1 (pre 99) will fit assuming you have the correct differential ratio.

Wekkim to the board, by the way!

Dood, you're like minutes away from me. (In Canyon Park here)

Hit me up sometime and we can hang out. My girlfriend, Laurel, has virtually the same car you do. . . I'm sure there's much you two have to discuss. :P

Hey whats up Yukon thanks for the welcome!!

I guess I have somebody to run too when I need help with this car...

I love what your girlfriend is doing to her car, I have been following and reading up all of her projects and it is very exciting to say the least. Keep me updated on what is up next for her car.

As for my car, I want this annoying "stuttering" to go away before I go into modding it.
Maybe a decent set of springs and shocks combo
bigger wheels (trying to stick with a stock subaru)....

So anything that is a 1997 and older Legacy tranny will work with the current motor in my car?

Nope, anything thats a newer generation subaru (not xt loyale or justy) will fit in your car.

Although I havnt heard of it done it looks like any transmission earlier than 99 will work (forester, impreza, legacy) as long as the differential matches.

according to nabisco, all the ej series motors and transmissions are interchangable. but, of course, they're not always right

aww... thank you. Just trying to renew Ruby to her previous glory, and give her a bit of a heart transplant. :)
