When I had the car looked at, one of the things that was said to be a problem was the tranny pan gasket was leaking onto the exhaust and causing a nasty smell. My questions is, do I have to remove the exhaust in order to change the gasket or is there enough room to just unscrew it and slide it out?

I think you should borrow some ramps and take a can of carb cleaner to the bottom of the car. After driving for a while take a look.

I dont think its the pan leaking. The hotest part of the exhaust runs on the front and side of the transmission. The only place the tranny fluid could blow onto the exhaust is near the back. More likely you have a power stearing leak into the exhaust or a crank seal leaking.

yeah....clean it up....and make sure it's leaking from there. The gaskets don't usually leak unless they're opened up.

If it is the pan gasket.....you can take the pan off without touching the exhaust.

yeah I don't think it's the atf either, the level was pretty much full. I hadn't actually checked the level was just getting an idea of what i'd have to get myself into. I don't know if it's the pwoer steering atf either it's been at the full mark for quite a while now without me adding anything. I'll try and clean it up sometime this week/end and go take a detailed look at it.

Make sure you check the Transaxle dip stick(90wt.) Mine was overfilling with ATF and coming out the vent tube-thus dripping down to the pan-replace the pan gasket, but that wasnt the problem. Rebuilt trany from Rancho Cordova. Good Luck, Dave in Tahoe.
