Smog/Emissions

So i got my car done today, passed pretty easily even with 140,000 and no cats.

I'd be interested to see how well other people's cars run, mileage and numbers wise, with an interest in modifications as well. Personally i think my DIS-2 is probably the reason i still pass, the completeness of the burn that it acheives surely helps.

Here are my results, keep in mind that this is Utah and it's just a tailpipe test in my county:

High-speed (~2500rpms):
Hydrocarbons CO% CO2%
Standard 220 1.20 N/A
Reading 44 .53 14.6
Deviation 176 .67 N/A

Idle (~1000rpm)
Hydrocarbons CO% CO2%
Standard 220 1.20 N/A
Reading 138 .55 14.1
Deviation 82 .65 N/A

I'll post my emissions test results when I go to the garage in a sec. I passed . . .

DLC, you're making me want to just get rid of my cat completely!!!

How loud is your car compared to say a catted turbo leg/wrx with an exhaust?

Well, it's not loud, but it sounds a lot like some WRXes i've heard, with the same throaty, pleasing tone. I know of a few other guys in town that have WRXes, but i don't socialize with them at all.

The only thing i have to compare it to was a friends 98 RS, which had the most aggressive exhaust note i've ever heard on a stock engine, with custom-made equal-length headers, hi-flow cat and Mangnaflow muffler. Up in the revs, driving away from me, it could probably scare small children. Mine isn't anywhere near that, though i've only heard it a few times from outside the car.

I removed the cats when i got the DP built, with the assumption that i'd have to buy one when the time came. To my suprise, it passed, and most places really don't care if all of the equipment is there, but that it passes, which is how i look at it. I can't say that a seemingly similar car would have the same results with comparable equipment, like the DIS-2, but i'm living proof, two years running.

Good news to know. I plan to use a 3 inch high flow cat mounted farther down stream than stock (near the transmission outlet). I feel that it will still allow smooth exhaust flow and clean up any fuel left over.
