since our narrow band o2 sensors are not very good for tuning, it would be handy to have a wide band sensor installed with a good a/f guage. Is it possible to "detune" the signal for the ecu, so that you could install the sensor in the spot the current one occupies? Or do you just have to have a bung welded into the exhaust and go nuts?

My only wideband experience is with the TechEdge kits, and all versions of that have "simulated narrow-band" outputs, whose output signal is similar to a narrow-band sensor, which is appropriate for connecting to the stock ECU.
You can even recalibrate the signal to center it around a different ratio so closed-loop operation oscillates around a richer or leaner ratio.
