When I start my 96 legacy up, the A T OIL TEMP light flashes for about 5 seconds, then quits. Previous owner said this is nothing to worry about. Is he correct?

means the TCU is picking up a sensor or something out of specs....it'd be worth checking to see what code it is....so you could diagnosis the problem.

can any mechanic do this, or does a subaru garage have special computer diagnostic tests?

This article's about the SVX, but it may apply to your car too:

It explains how to read the codes.

I have a code 24. the garage said it was " hard coded " and they could noty fix it without taking the transmission apart. they said the steering problem I am having ( car hesitates, jerks when turning steering wheel hard at slow speeds) is from binding and that fixing this code 24 would fix the problem. vrg3 excellent link discusses code 24 and it seems laa the tests are for proper connections and voltages. How would fixing code 24 have an effect on my steering problem? Incidentally, the car shifts great, and highway handling and riding are just fine. It is a 96 legacy with 103k miles.
