I need an exhaust setup.
I have been thinking about it lately, and I think one of the first things I want to do to my car would be an exhaust.
What companies are out there? How much should I expect to pay from ordering parts to getting it installed?
Also, which downpipe is decent? The one by Stromung posted in this forum looked pretty nice and not to expensive.
Once I get a replacement downpipe, would a regular cat-back work, or would it just be better to get a whole turbo-back all at once?
What do you think?

Check out www.msr-usa.com . They offer one of the only "bolt on" Legacy turbo TBE. They are very expensive though too, so take that into account. I run the C.E.S. "street" and it kicks serious ass.
Personally I would do a whole TBE if you plan to increase boost.
You know, Turbo XS is in your back yard. I would go talk to Phil or Nate and see how much they'd charge you for a custom TBE. If you're interested here's Phils info: http://www.turboxs.com/

While you're at it go around the corner to Altered Atmosphere Motor Sports and do a baseline pull on their AWD dyno. Then as you do mods you can go back and see what they're really doing for you! Here's their site: http://www.alteredatmosphere.com/tuning.asp

Yea, the reason TXS was my first choice was because it takes me 15 minutes to get to their shop. About the same to get to AA.
Cost is a big factor. If it wasn't, I'd get the C.E.S Street kit. But it is, so the TXS WRX TBE looked good. From what I hear, it bolts right in, just a matter of lengthening the downpipe slightly and welding up custom brackets.
Muffler choice is also something I'm kind of curious about. I was thinking Borla, but I really don't know. Maybe Magnaflow?
We tried to get a Dyno-Day setup for the CapitalSHO club (and pretty much anyone who signed up), but AA was trying to charge 95 bucks for 2 AWD pulls w/ A/F readouts. Simply not cost effective. Maybe if we had more people to set one up. I should post on NASIOC and see if anyone want's to run a few pulls. They were charging 75 for the FWD guys, and a place in Damascus was only charging 50 for the FWD guys. No AWD dyno there.
How much should I expect to pay from pulling the car in to driving it out?

Ya, they're pretty salty.BAC5.2 wrote: Cost is a big factor. If it wasn't, I'd get the C.E.S Street kit.
My understanding is that almost all WRX downpipes will bolt right up no problem. The mid pipe and axle back portions need the hangers redone and the axle-back portion of pipe needs lengthened about 5-6".But it is, so the TXS WRX TBE looked good. If you buy a TBE wouldn't it come with a muffler? Or are you thinking of swapping out the one that comes with the TBE?Muffler choice is also something I'm kind of curious about. I was thinking Borla, but I really don't know. Maybe Magnaflow?
Ya, it's usually $95 for 2 AWD baseline pulls and like $115 for 2 AWD baseline pulls with A/F. That's not their group rate though. We tried to get a Dyno-Day setup for the CapitalSHO club (and pretty much anyone who signed up), but AA was trying to charge 95 bucks for 2 AWD pulls w/ A/F readouts. Sorry, I don't follow you. Pull into where? AA motor sports? TXS?How much should I expect to pay from pulling the car in to driving it out?

Thanks for the info.
Sorry for the error. I mean how much for me to pull into TXS, tell them what I want, and the drive out the door with the exhaust installed and ready to roll.
If the TBE comes with the muffler, then that's even better.

I don't know. You'd have to contact them and ask but I doubt it would be cheap. Probably easy over 1k. Their cheapest WRX system that comes with a muffler is $1149. That's before paying to have it reworked to fit your car too. They offer a TBE that doesn't have a muffler, for $767 but that too will need reworked to fit.BAC5.2 wrote:.

You may want to just get a DP of your liking and then do a cheaper, mild steel or SS, custom cat-back or something too.

How do you think that would work out price wise compared to the WRX kit?legacy92ej22t wrote:You may want to just get a DP of your liking and then do a cheaper, mild steel or SS, custom cat-back or something too.

Dont know if its any help but theres a couple of companies over here (UK) that do systems for the legacy turbo, the cheapest being mongoose at around 500 pounds (the rest you really dont want to know the price of!!!!) for a full turbo back stainless system.
If only I hadnt bought the bike, this would feel fast :P

500 pounds is roughly 950USD or so, right?

Sorry I took so long to reply, I was out of town and away from my PC all week.BAC5.2 wrote:How do you think that would work out price wise compared to the WRX kit?legacy92ej22t wrote:You may want to just get a DP of your liking and then do a cheaper, mild steel or SS, custom cat-back or something too.
It really depends on what you get. A custom mandrel bent SS exhaust can/will still run pretty high. A mandrel bent mild steel exhaust is far cheaper but will still cost a bit in labor. If you get a normal crush bent mild steel setup then it would be real cheap but not the best for flow (I wouldn't do this unless you don't plan to up boost past about 12-13 psi personally).
IIRC ciper is getting a 3" mandrel bent, mild steel setup with a Perrin twin dump DP, a Magnaflow 3" cat, a Dynomax resonator and muffler for about $800 USD.
There are sooo many options when it comes to doing an exhaust that it really comes down to how much you want to spend. I'd do this. Pick out what you want (DP, cat, resonator, muffler ect..) and add it up. Then look around at all three options for piping and then choose where you want to go from there.

Here you go http://www.mongooseexhausts.com/ . Used to have one of their DTM exhausts on my old golf and it was pretty good value but it was a wee bit of a bitch to fit since the company I got it off sent the one for the big bumper model (you probably didnt get the small bumper model) and the exhaust hangers were getting a bit rusty. I say were I still have the car but its sat awaiting rear wheel drive and a V8 (I kid you not!). Oh and yep the dollars at about 1.9$ per pound atm. Dunno what the postage would be like but its worth having a look.

Just an update.
The exhaust got bumped back in the mod list.
But when it goes in, it will be a full custom job. From the downpipe (bellmouth) out to the tip.
Full 3" mandrel SS tubing with a 3" free-flow cat and a straight through Magnaflow.
All custom built, and it should cost me around 800 bucks installed and out the door.

1) Tune up. Fix everything.legacy92ej22t wrote:Sweet! How far back did you bump it?
2) Stand alone engine management.
3) FMIC and exhaust at the same time
4) Fuel and turbo upgrade.
That's the rough outline of what I'll be doing. Other things will be mixed in, but that's just the basic idea.

I am undecided on the FMIC. It's the leading possibility, but I want to talk to the shop that'll be doing my work. I don't want a fender bender to cost me $1000, so that's why I'm still shakey.
