What does it take to flip our cars?

I've always been afraid that I'll turn too sharp or something and I'll go rollin down the street. Is this something that isn't very probable? I know there's always variables that can factor in and change everything but still. Would you have to be going a good speed and really cut the wheel to get it to tip? I've never been on 3 wheels so I think so far I'm pretty safe with it. Has anyone rolled a legacy or been in one that did roll?

Dont think its possible without striking something.
You are more likely to loose traction, I wouldnt mind showing you in my sedan. I get it to lay pretty low on one side (killing the sway bars!)
Maybe when I drive my wagon up to S-Squared I could let you take a ride? I wouldnt doubt its capable of >.95G force.

I think most rolls happen when you hit something that you ramp off of, like a curb or something.

This will help you. The car in the video is modified beyond belief, its probably one of the only subaru I know of that can do this....

Even with Falkens I doubt it would be very hard if not impossible to get up on two wheels without some type of "ramp"
I enjoy making my coworkers scream on the way to lunch sometimes.

Not sure, Im starting to get agrivated that its taking so long.
I think you shouldnt worry at all, instead find a big open area and practice trying to flip. If you can find any possible way to flip you can practice recovering.
What you should be worried about is understear and entering a turn to fast.

i had this nice corner i loved to slide around and had it down pact.....i got new tires and gave it a shot, this time it didnt slide the same way, i shouldve known it, but i didnt, i dont really know how it happened.....something caught i heard rim contact with pavement next thing i knew i heard my sunroof break...i rolled it once landed back on 4 wheels...smoked my hood, swayed my roof and destroyed my driver side rear quarter panel...got pics of what it looked like after i sold some parts to make up for the lost $$ ....
http://this.is.my.website.emetic.org/in ... acyCarnage#
im in the second row third pic over...i sold the motor and tranny to a couple of guys at nasioc....wish i knew about this bbs then i wouldve came straight here and sold it to you guys but it was a couple years ago....i ended up pulling the interior out and put it in my LSi, along with struts rims and a bunch of other goodies....i sure miss that car, AWD turbo 5mt

I bet you popped the bead and the rim contacted the road surface.
What tires did you have? Did you check the pressure before the turn?

I've pulled J-turns in my wagon and never came close to flipping (goodbye transmission, though). Oh, J-turns are when you speed in reverse then whip the wheel around to spin the car in a 180 as you shift into forward or drive and then drive off. They do them all the time in movies.

"They do them all the time in movies."
I do them all the time in rental cars
You should have seen what we did recently. My friends f150 got the stereo stolen so we got a Mazda6 rental. For one we drove at ~7000 rpm on the highway for 4-5 miles in order to get the resonation from the engine just right within the cabin. Then we practiced bouncing off the rev limiter at 45mph while holding the brakes (putting a huge load on the engine) to see if we could get the manifold glowing. It didnt have ABS so we practiced "drawing" lines on the road that change shape as you turn the steering wheel. Locked the hand brake and spun the front wheels, getting the car to rotate around on the rear.
Pretty peppy for a 4 cylinder I must say. Still not as stiff as a (slow) protege 5 though.
The funnest rental car has to be a 4wd f250 though. Man can that thing take a licking!

I have trouble abusing machinery like that! Too much empathy for them. Strangely wnough, though, people are generally a different story for me.
Sure sounds lke fun though!

i keep my tires at 32psi. I have done 3 rotations on a dry parking lot, with bum rear suspension. No chance of flipping. If you swerve and slam the brakes at the same time, you will load the front wheel and flipping is a risk, keep it in mine in panic maneuvers.

After 3 hours of non-stop lapping at shannonville raceway i spun my car at 130km/h off a double apex corner (trying hard to keep up with an sti - and was doing a good job of it at that). I left the tarmac exactly sideways and slid sideways through the grass runoff area which was pretty rough at that. When I headed back into the pits and inspected my car i realized that the passenger side tire bead had popped off and back on to the rim; effectively sandwiching a big chunk of grass and soil between the tire bead and rim. This was with stock suspension and very sticky tires so i was pretty suprised and lucky that the car didn't roll. I have video of the spin and pics of the tires but no way to get them on here at the moment
However, i won't say you can't roll your legacy, i know its very possible to do so...
Friends cars that have rolled and what caused it:
2002 wrx - shannonville raceway, drove off track and rolled trying to turn the car back on to the track
1992 pontiac sunbird - rear corner was struck by a street sweeper
198x hyundai pony - rally road with a big yump and ditch
1992 suzuki swift - auto-x with quick left then right
199x hyundai excel - black ice and snow bank

I had my younger brother driving the return trip from a recent outing, he fell asleep at the wheel on the highway and slid off the road. There was grass and dirt etc packed between the tire and the wheel on both driver's side wheels.
here are pics of the road

Damn, that guy in that video was HUMMIN. He was keeping up with that Porsche!
Looks like a 95 or so Legacy GT? That's incredible. Funny and crazy at the same time. Definately a video to be kept.
Do you happen to know the specs of the car? That's scary.

yikes. Do you think if he'd kept on the gas he would've just spun? It looks like he kinda braked through the spin, I know he let off the gas.

Nope, picked that vid up a long time ago. Don't remember there being any kind of story with it.

That video majorly sucks. I feel for the guy. Coming back from a park I had a guy in my car that is not very pushy with his car. There was a nice wide 90 degree turn that headed out to the freeway and I always wanted to slide that corner. There was no one on the street at all except for behind me so I decided to chance it. Just as we got to the turn, I don't know how fast I was going, but it wasn't that slow by any means, I pulled a little wide and then swung the car in tight and tapped the ebrake ever so slightly to get the car to slide almost sideways. It worked and in front of me was the little reflectors that stand up on the side of the road. We came sliding around the corner and fairly gracefully pulled straight onto the street that I was shooting for. My friend was dead silent the whole time. As I pulled onto the freeway I glanced at him and saw his tense expression and grinned as I said "pretty cool, eh?" He just replied in a very timid voice "cool."
I was a bit worried because I had never done that before when I first did it, but once I was in the turn it wasn't that bad. The car was real stable, and probably the worst fear you'd have is probably popping a bead or sliding off the road. Popping a bead and having your rim dig into the pavement or dirt would probalby have a similar affect of hitting a knot when your whittling or hitting a crack when scraping gasket material off of something. It would be almost a dead stop. At least the forces acting on your car would change to a large degree causing some unexpectanties.

You'd think if he was on slicks, had he kept on the gas and kept them spinning, he would have just kept sliding sideways.
I would have just popped it into neutral and gotten myself backwards. Looks like the speedometer was right around 90 or 100 miles per hour, but that might not be right, lol.

I'm very familiar with Lime Rock and not sure how he lost it there. It must have started to come around and he just panicked or something. Though, in his defense, a Porsche 956 got trashed after spinning on that corner at the Rennsport Reunion. I think they said it was aound 300k in damage

. Very sad to see.

thanks for the offer, i don't have the video digitized yet, if i manage to get them on the computer i'll let you know
my spin was from a combination of pushing too hard and not running enough gas in the tank... had some fuel starvation in the long corners, speaking of which, has anyone here made baffles or a surge tank to prevent that from happening? all scoobs seem to suffer from that issue

I really like this thread! Keep it going!
Even with the storys told it still seems impossible to flip your car unless you hit something or pop a bead. For the most part you can avoid this on normal driving.
