I was wondering if anyone is running their SS without a muffler. I am a poor college kid and want to get a 3in cat back. I just don't want to spend the money for a muffler if it isn't going to be that loud. So if anyone knows then hooka brotha up with some info.

IggDawg had been running his Legacy without a muffler, just straightpipe. Said it wasn't that bad.
I understand the turbo muffles alot of the noise, based on comments from others.

My swap did not come with the muffler. I ran for about 3 weeks with the stock turbo exhaust -muffler. It was definitely not too loud, however i had had two cats to calm it down a little.

With cats and no muffler it sounds great, a little loud, never got pulled over with it though. With no cats forget it, louder than hell... sounds great, but way too loud, got pulled over in about a week.

I drove my buddies WRX with a cattless TBE and cattless up pipe through an HKS Carbon-Ti muffler. It sounded pretty good, not to loud. I'm sure an SS couldn't be that much louder.

Well.. I can't speak for all SS's but I can tell you mine was one of the loudest cars I've ever heard, I actually drowned out wide open harleys under bridges.. no lie! Made my ears hurt.

My friend here with the 91 turbo has a straight pipe, he doesn't have a cat, just a CEL on his dash
It sounds very nice, actually! Better than any WRX I've ever heard to be honest. And while it will definitely announce its arrival, it's not terrible.
Since a turbo is essentially a restriction in the exhaust, one can get away without a muffler. The Dodge SRT-4, for example, has no mufflers, only a cat and two resonators.
I'd say it's worth at least trying...
cats, and a stainless free flow muffler

i recently took off my stock muffler and replaced it with an aftermarket can. it really isnt loud at all. it was a little louder with no muffler, but im going to hollow out my cat so i can actually hear it from inside the car. you'd be safe without a muffler, but you prolly want to keep your cats intact, just so its not too loud

91White-T, you were running without a muffler tho. The car BAC5.2 drove had one. There's the difference. I don't have a cat but have a tanabe backbox. It's one of the louder cars on the street, but not unbearable.

The law doesn't give you any shit? I get stares from every cop even with the muffler I have now...

I even got pulled over by a motorcycle cop for a bs speeding ticket. The guy just looked my car over and told me to be on my way. Honestly, considering the "other" hooked up cars on the road, mine looks pretty "ordinary." I'm sure the cops just think that my car has a rusted out exhaust.
Whenever there's a cop behind me or next to me, I try my best to keep it as quiet as possible: coasting in neutral short shifting, not going into boost.
You might just have a lot of ahole cops where you are.

The cops around here follow people who have even slightly modded cars and wait for you to do even the slightest thing wrong... Happened to me just last night, cop came flying out of a Dunkin Donuts and followed me for a couple of miles waiting for me to do something stupid, eventually turned around in a driveway when I did nothing wrong.
