Not Doing the Swap

I worked the numbers today, and financially, it's not worth it. I think I'll either go for a newer turbo bf, or see if an RS is in my price range. I've got 210k miles on the current engine, and I dont see her holding together too much longer. It already leaks and burns oil, as well as runs pretty rough.
If i decide to go with an RS, would anyone be interested in my agx's and whitelines?

Don't get a RS, a nice low mileage Touring Wagon would be perfect for you Laurel.

You could build it up and spank Art!
I can't remember, did you change to the 92+ non-tapered setup?

RS's are pretty though. :p

hrmmm... what about the SVX?

Cool cars. Kinda small, but fun. Weird windows and automatic only were turn offs to some people.
The EG series (I think) engine was also kind of iffy to some people because it didn't use the standard EJ tricks. A whole different beast.
I love them though. I looked at a super clean 95 while I was looking at the 94. I went with the 94 SS, and love it.

Hmmm. . . well, if the RS is new enough, it would share some parts with my baby, as well.
Either way, at least we all know you're still getting another Subaru.

NOOOOOOOO!! laurel ya can't go for an rs, those are poopy. They do look mean though. But that's about it. Plus once you get the itch for more power you wil be looking at an engine swap or something. I say stay with the legacies, turbo esp. If you do decide to go with smething else, then I'd gladly take your shit

An SVX???? You think your
swap would be expensive??? While I think SVX's are gorgeous cars and I would love to own one someday, our cars are about as expensive as Chevy 350's to maintain compared to one of those!

They're probably Subaru's most expensive car ever, overall...
RS's are nice! They're an ideal autoX car. Put an experienced driver in a stock RS with just good tires and you can spank WRX's all day long. I've witnessed it with my own two eyes...
I say get a turbo wagon too. Still has what you're used to in Ruby, and has a tough-as-nails EJ22T under the bonnet too!

yeah they are spensive to repair. But goddamn they are beautiful. If I ever end up getting rid of sooby, I'll be trying like hell to get an svx.

I wish Subaru would remake the SVX and bring it back. Pop an EJ25 in there for flexibility (mod potential, etc), and give it a manual transmission, and it would sell like hotcakes.

ez30 or refine the eg33, just can't stick a 4 banger in there.

I was thinking if they used an EJ series engine, then the aftermarket would be awesome.
I'd love to see an H8 made at some point. That would be so cool.
I'd like to see the EJ22T come back too.

An H8 would be a problem to put in anything not a mid-engined sports car. The weight overhangs the front wheels, so it would understeer or have to be really small displacement using all odd parts. But the main thing is that it wouldn't fit in a Legacy. It would be nice if there were one though, then you could get a motor from a jy in a few years and put it in a custom vehicle...I'm thinking a mid-engined Caterham type thing.
Too bad about the money. Laurel, but a TW would probably be a much better bet anyway, especially with the bodywork you needed (not that I'm one to talk with what I've spent - at least yours isn't fwd, too. But I'm stupid like that). Then you could convert to a manual later if you want (

I never expected it to fit in a Legacy, I just would love to see one some day.
It would be cool if it was Subaru's style to make mid-engined super cars, that'd be great.
That would be so sweet

I dont see how mileage of the current engine matters. What difference will getting a slightly newer legacy make?

SVX's are drop dead gorgeous cars. I hope to get another car in the future and that will be an SVX for sure. That and maybe an older RX Turbo coupe, Hmm do I see a Suby collection in the future???
I know what your thinking, It'd be goddamn hard to choose from a turbo wagon, RS, or SVX. For practical purposes turbo wagon, to impress- an RS coupe and to completely stun...
an SVX done up like that one!!

If you want a subaru for auto-x go with an "RS". But it doesn't have to be an "RS", get an older impreza ('93-'97) and do an engine swap with the extra money, either (2.5NA, WRX, or EJ22T).. there's plenty of cheap 2.5NA engines left around from swaps and the lack of turbo lag and low torque makes it killer in auto-x. With the addition of an RS bumper, spoiler and sideskirts you won't be able to tell the difference between your impreza and the newer ones. All the new RS components both stock and aftermarket will bolt right up and you'll be able to bolt in your current suspension to the new car.
Get some sticky DOT tires like falken azenis or kumhos or maybe even R compunds if your ready for them and you're good to go. It's easy to get an impreza to rotate with the correct tire pressures and rear sway, and if you have a really tight auto-x course remove the front sway bar. You'll be unstoppable.

Just swap engines with Art. I doubt he'd notice...

NuwanD's idea isn't bad. Those early 1.8 Imprezas are dirt cheap and lighter than the RS. You could tell the difference with an RS, though as the RSs were post facelift, but you could look like an early left-hand drive WRX if you got the little hood vents from Europe or NZ/Australia. They looked like regular louvres rather than the 2-opening with mesh of the RS. Incidentally, the Legacy rally cars had the same early-style louvres. If you wanted it to look sleeper I bet you could do the whole deal (engine and car) for under $2K - especially where you are as there are far more cheap Subarus there.

yep, the early gc8 body doesn't have the flared fenders of the RS but everything bolts on easily so the complete look is only 5 body panels (4 fender + hood) away. The RS hood would bolt on as well, but you'd have to change your headlights to the RS ones for that to fit, as well as for the RS front fenders. The RS headlights are slightly bigger and have a different curve on the upper side.
