Wow
eee! I've got a palmtop with a single 4.77 MHz processor. ;)
Seriously, though, that sounds like a really sweet setup.

No, Im saying that the machine is not optimized for the application.
Meaning that stepping down to 1gb of ram and two slower proccessors then using the additional money on a 0+1 raid configuration with write cache would have yeilded a significantly faster machine for the money.

why would he need raid 0+1? if any type of raid would be used it should be 0. I dont believe he's running any kind of business or applications that need that kind of backup.

But if he connected his pinzak valve to the manglo capacitor and then replaced his BER-426JS sterlo board he'd have one slick item.

Until you personally loose a crapload of data you wont understand. Raid 0 is terrible, it shouldnt even exist. You DOUBLE your chances of failure drives that are already likely to fail.
Actually raid 10 would be best except most cheap cards dont support it. With 0+1 a single drive failure causes the entire array to become raid 0 meaning a second drive failure causes data loss. Raid 10 allows you to lose more drives, upto half as long as they are on seperate stripe sets.
For the majority of operations the caching array controller can make a huge difference, for the money its usually the best upgrade you can perform. Even 32mb of read and write cache is enough to make a difference. It allows your system to be free without waiting for the disk. For example I have formatted an 800gb drive on a controller with 64mb write cache in about 5 seconds.
I have a P3 500 with 1gb ram at home with a raid 10 (4x9gb) and its ALOT faster than the many new machines others have in any operation except raw cpu speed (including a 3.xghz new dell with high bus speed and such). Its still on a 66mhz bus too.
More CPU cache is often better than the speed. Id rather take a dual 1.8ghz machine with 2 meg cpu cache than a dual 3ghz with 256k (for example).

i've los ta bunhc of shit more than once, it sucks I know. It just seems odd that one would use 0+1 for anything other than a server or business applications. to each their own.

Well would you suggest raid 5 then (slow) or a mirror (slower)?
