Ok, I've been out of the loop for awhile, and a quick scan didn't bring up any other posts on the subject, so I've gotta ask: What info does decoding the transmission ID give? The tranny in my car has over 200,000 miles on it, and I'm thinking of replacing it when I swap out engines (there's a question on that in another post). I'd like to know what tranns are bolt-in replacements so I can compare cost of a rebuild vs. a replacement/upgrade. Also, where is the ID plate on these? Thanks!

Bolt in replacements would be any forester/impreza/legacy/svx with the matching rear differential upto MY99 for automatics, and the samefor 5 speed as long as the clutch type is the same or you swap the needed parts (cable or hydro).

The decoder gives you the model and year
