wrx intercooler shroud into a scoop!

With all the talk about modifying a wrx hoodscoop I figured I'd try a different approach. I got an intercooler shroud from a person on nasioc for $20. It bolts up perfectly onto the hood . . . whew!

Now I've got to find an appropriate scoop to graft on the top of the thing!! Honestly, the shape of the inner piece makes more of a "good" match in shape (it's pretty square). I'm thinking I could just seat it through the hole after I take the stock scoop off, bolt it to the stock points on the underside of the hood, and then fiberglass/body filler around the edges so that it falls flush with the hood line.

What's even better about this approach is that it gives a better separation between the intercooler air and turbo air entering the scoop.

At least I have something to do once the weather starts getting warmer!

Post a picture.

You could always cut a mold from florists foam, and glass a custom scoop for the car.

Will do. Hard to explain without a picture. But this piece will actually BE the scoop!

Need to get home first.

Actually, one of my considerations is to leave it as it is, with just a little minor bondo filling. I'll end up with an asymetrical hoodscoop, since it cuts off a little before the end of the opening (and there's a grill type opening for the turbo). Part of me thinks this would look kinda cool. Otherwise, I'll just make an extension piece out of some thin aluminum and then epoxy/fiberglass it so that it looks even with the rest of the "scoop."

I highly recommend avioding the bondo/fiberglass part. Metal, plastic and filler all expand/contract differently, especially plastic. Mating the 3 sufaces with filler will begin to crack very soon after you apply it due to humidity/temp changes.

Well, I guess I'll just have to make this actual piece into a mold for a complete fiberglass piece. Hmmm, I wonder if anyone else on here would be interested in this piece, should it come out decent looking.

Maybe....I'd like to see the it.

I have a MY02 WRX scoop that was WRB, I already painted it white but still need to clear coat it. I am planning on cutting it in this late spring/summer but it would be nice to do something that looks good, is functional and doesn't involve cutting the hood.

This piece bolts underneath the hood where there would normally be a blocking plate. So all the stock mounting points would be used. I'd work the scoop to be more like a larger version of the stocker, and mould with fiberglass and filler so that it would sit in the hood like the stocker.

*crossing my fingers*

instead of making your RS look like something else, have you tried putting a thermo fan below the intercooler to suck extra air in through your scoop? then hook up a water spray system to assist with cooling, that way it will keep its sleeperish good looks!
