What year did the fuel injectors change?

Since I cant tell what year car this engine came from, can anyone tell me what year the fuel injectors changed? I know that they are not the same as the '90 Legacy injectors and I'm not sure if '91 used the same ones. Then I think that they were all the same from '92 through '94. So did '91 use the same as '90 or the newer ones?

From what I know, there were 4 different types of fuel injectors used on our cars:

90-91 non-turbo automatics, pintle-type, early shape, mounted with the connector diagonal to the fuel rail, gray tops, made by JECS, part number 16611AA090.

90-91 non-turbo manuals, ball-type, early shape, mounted with the connector diagonal to the fuel rail, black tops, made by Hitachi, part number 16611AA120.

91-94 turbos, ball-type, early shape, mounted with the connector diagonal to the fuel rail, pink top, made by Hitachi, part number 16611AA150.

92-94 non-turbos, pintle-type, later shape, mounted with the connector perpendicular to the fuel
rail, red top, made by JECS, part number 16611AA310.

The early shape is kind of cylindrical and uses lots of o-rings. The later shape just has 2 o-rings, and looks a little more cone-shaped because its radius changes several times.

vrg3 thanks for that info it is very helpful. I dont know very much about fuel injectors but by ball-type you mean something like this http://www.partsamerica.com/product_ima ... -18168.jpg

and by pintle-type you mean something like this

correct? Also do the later models have red tops because mine are the more cylinder shape with the gray tops and as far as I know the pintle-type so Im think they are 90-91 type. Thanks again for the help, and Im glad I found this site because it has been very helpful.

Yes, the first image you linked to looks like an old-shape ball-type injector, and the second looks like an old-shape pintle-type injector.

The new-shape injectors look like this:

So, yeah, it looks like your engine is from a 1990 or 1991 automatic.

Sweet, thanks again for all the help. On partsamerica.com they have a reman. pintle-type injector for a '91 but they dont list it for a '90. But it should still work even if my engine is a '90 right? All of the other injectors listed have the same part number from '90 to '91 but they only list the reman. on the '91 page. BTW I have my engine in an '82 Vanagon Westy and I'm loving it so far.

Really :)
Id love to see some pics, and I have questions for you.
Im thinking of buying a 72 914, and I know of a cheap EJ22t in my area.
I can prolly figure out the pressure plate/flywheel, but how does the motor bolt up to the gearbox?

bingerthedog, any injector from a 90-91 non-turbo should work for you; the fuel rails were the same on all engines in those years. Just be sure you keep track of all the o-rings and everything!

Out of curiosity, why are you buying remanufactured injectors? You would probably be better off having your stock injectors serviced by a place like RC Engineering, and it would cost less.

You sure the rails are the same between autos & mt?

Unless I'm reading the parts sheets wrong (which is of course a possibility), it looks like there were 3 types of rails: 90-91 all, 92-94 non-turbo, and 92-94 turbo.

The turbo injectors are the same for all years, though, so the first and last rail type are probably compatible.

rallitektech - I used a kit that I bought from KEP the address is http://www.kennedyeng.com/ and I saw on their site they have kits for 914's

vrg3 - I sent my injectors in and found out that 3 out of 4 of them are bad electronically so there is nothing they can do, and new injectors are over $100 each.

Ah, that sucks, bingerthedog.

I have a set of injectors off a 90 Legacy 5-speed that you could have cheap. The engine ran when the injectors were pulled. It might be good to replace the o-rings and maybe even have them cleaned professionally, but they'll cost less than newly remanufactured injectors. PM me if you're interested.

vrg3 I have a set of '90 5-speed injectors but the engine I'm using came from an auto so they are different. I think I would rather stick with the same injectors than switch over the manual injectors just so I don't have any problems. But just out of curiosity would the injectors from a manual fit in my engine without any modification?

I have three brand new injectors I wouldnt mind to sell. Have to check part numbers if you are interested.

ciper I would be very interested. Are they for a '90-'91 Auto and how much are you looking to get? Email me if you want. zachess@hotmail.com

I can't say for sure whether or not they'd fit, but I believe they would since the part catalog shows the same part number for automatic and manual fuel rails. I believe the reason for the different injector types is that 90-91 non-turbo models used different engine management for automatics and manuals (automatics had JECS ECUs, MAF sensors, and injectors, while manuals had the same parts manufactured by Hitachi).

But depending on how much ciper wants for the new ones you may be better off with them.
