You sure? Can someone triple check please?
If that is in fact the case then I have something interesting. The number I gave in the first post was FROM THE ENGINE PLATE ON A 22B IMPREZA

The short name of Subaru engines that people use comes from the engine type on the vin plate.
EJ20GDW5PR - Ver 2 type RA EJ20G
EJ20KDW6PJ - Ver 3 type RA EJ20K
EJ207DW1PJ - Ver 5 type RA EJ207
so on so on.

I read your post on Nabisco.
The turbo legacy and 22b share the same block, but the 22b didn't get the squirters. The legacy blocks with the squiters should have 2 crankcase breather tubes and the 22b has only 1. This is from Adam at Lateral Performance, he specializes in 22b's and is a moderator on 22b.com forums.

hmm...interesting...doesn't the ej20g only have one crankcase breather as tube as well?

You mean a quad cam engine with dual cam heads right?

I think Ciper is referring to the shortblock being the same, not the longblock.

Ok,
*playing devil's advocate here* Then show me where on your Legacy it says you have an EJ22G? I seem to remember the plate on my recently sold turbo stating that I had an EJ22T...

Oh, one other thing. The way you read an applied engine code is as follows:
E= engine
J= Flat 4 16 valves
22= division of displacement (2.2l)
G= division of fuel supply (in the 22B this is DOHC HP Turbo)
D= division of rebulation of exhaust gas (japanese domestic market)
W= division of transmission (manual)
7= division of year (1998, the Impreza began in '92)
P= division of spec difference (p=DOHC direct push, STI)
R= division of spec difference (R= power steering, AC, STI)
So, I hate to rain on your parade, but when you get back from the garage you will not be able to tell me that any of you have EJ22G's...

I think we need to double check on the source of "EJ22G" mentioned on this board before.
It may be coincidence that the block name is EJ22G and the Vin plate happened to have the same letters.
It would be like saying Wireless Access Points and Wireless Application Protocol must be the same because they happen to be related and share the same letters.
Matt, you should do a google and a nasioc search on EJ22G and see how the block is referred to as such very often.

I don't need to search on google or NASIOC to see that people refer to the EJ22T as an EJ22G all the time. I even used to do so myself until I got properly educated in how Subaru names their engines. Just because they call it that does not make it so...

What would the proper short name for a closed deck EJ22 from a US Legacy turbo be then?
Something like EJ227?
Up until recently I always said EJ22T, until someone on this board posted over on Nasioc about the G.

US EJ22t
does that help identify what engine you guys have?

Definitely not EJ227
The numbers replaced the letters in the division of fuel supply gradually starting in '98. In '98 there were engines with the G and K designations as well as with the 5 and 7. The thing that is inconsisten is that Subaru used the G designation on the 22B even though it was an STI special edition. Only in the early days of Imprezas had both the standard WRX and the STI been tagged EJ20G. In '97 that changed with the introduction fo the STI vIII and the creation of the K designation for STI's. Then in the next two years, the Ej20G blocks(which had become open deck from '94 on) got rolled into the K designation as well. fortunately, with the introduction of the number Subaru has been very consistent.
a 5 in the division of fuel supply means a DOHC turbo MPi
a 7 in the division of fuel supply means a DOHC turbo MPi High Performance, aka STI. The USDM EJ22T is definitely not an STi high performance engine.

I want you to create or link to a full engine code descrambler please.

All this time I've been trying to impress chicks by talking about the EJ22G in my kitchen. Maybe this is why it hasn't worked yet. I knew I should've just called it a turbo!

You guys are making this more complicated than it really is. All you have to do is have someone with a US turbo Legacy look at their vin plate and put up the Engine Type in this thread and the problem is solved, no more discussion needed. I'll get the Engine type for the 22b's from Adam on 22b.com.

The first post has the number from a 22B engine plate, unlike others on the boards Im in direct contact with a 22B owner.
Where did the EJ22G come from is the question, from my original understanding it was a BLOCK designation, the EJ22GXXXX on the engine plate is a combination of the EJ22 and G meaning DOHC from what Matt posted.

Well I wouldn't be surprised if the US turbo legacy's have EJ22G on their vin plate. It seems Subaru has a tendancy to do that to the US market. My 2-door RS and most others are marked as a sedan, so go figure. Oh well just trying to help.
