'92 Turbo Rear Bushing Replacement....

The rear bushings on my '92 Turbo are wore out real bad. Enough to make the car swerve if there's enough weight put on that end.

So, every subaru ive ever owned has had torsion bars and shocks. Never have i seen so many trailing arms, springs and bushings. My mechanic said they need to be pressed into place, but im sure i can manage to get them out and new ones in without a press... right? Also, im not sure if each bushing has a different name, but i noticed 2 that were destroyed. Both on the drivers side, but im sure the passenger side is just as bad.

I didnt have a chance to look at the front suspension, but my mechanic said most the damage is in the rear, and the front is fine. Is it okay to just replace the rear bushings, or would it be best to replace all the bushings? Im short on budget and time here, just need to get the car "Safe" for now.

Is this a terribly difficult job? I have plenty of tools, and room to work, but the structure of this legacy is all new to me.

Thanks all

Just get replacement bars which will not only have STIFFER bushings but allow you to adjust infinite toe and even camber and trac!

I dont need anything adjustable... right now i need to keep the entire job under $200 if possible.

Does anyone know if I can use a bench vise to press the bushings into place?

What if you pulled some new arms (I'm assuming trailing arms?) from a JY? They might have some with decent bushings for cheap and will be much less work. A few months from now I could answer your question about self-pressing, but I haven't collected the parts yet and it doesn't sound like you can wait.

Does the Turbo 92's share the same suspension as N/A Legacy's... and how abou years? I notice all the parts I look up say "All Legacy's" so I assume the same is true when it comes to the rear trailing arms etc...

Most of them do. Some years did not have rear swaybars, some had swaybars that mounted through the control arms.

Other then those exceptions, and omitting springs and struts, all control arms, 90-94 legacy, and 93-01 Impreza will work (sure of that).

I have a set of control arms from a 00 Impreza that i'd be willing to sell pretty cheap if you decide not to go w/ aftermarket ones.

Someone please qoute the price for random adjustable arms.

TheSubaruJunkie: You need to see that the adjustable arms will probably end up being cheaper in the long run.

mTK send me a PM with an asking price. The junkyard has a 1/2 price weekend, so I know i can pull them for cheap... but i dont wanna ride on junkyard parts if I dont have to.

Thanks guys for the help. Should I worry about the bushings for the swaybar as well??? Or just focus on the trailing arms?

What all parts are you wanting to replace, all the rear arms? I have the 4 lateral arms.

I would go ahead and do swaybar bushings too.

Okay, if your hell bent on stock parts then get the 4 bushings from 1stsubaru parts and a 12 ton press from harborfreight for 80$

Is a 12ton press needed? Could I just use a bench vise or something?

I think i'll take you up on that offer mTK. I would preffer to get the Poly bushings rather than OEM if i were to purchase them.

mTk, thanks a ton! I got the lateral arms today and was able to install the ones in front of the CV's, but not the ones in the rear. I'll need to get WRX swaybar endlinks before i can. The replacement of the front lateral arms was a great improvement tho! Still alittle movement in the rear wheel, but that will be taken care of by the rear arms later.

I don't think this is your problem, but just as an FYI, these cars have passive rear steering so the rear moves a little by design.

Does it? I thought i felt alittle play in the rear wheels while working back there. Also the rear end does seem alittle loose even tho the new arms are in. We'll see how it reacts with new swaybar bushings and after the other arms are replaced.

Its a small amount I'd bet you could eliminate with poly bushings. It should just help turn in alittle, it shouldn't feel loose when driving. I'll see if I can get up off my ass and look up some info on it.
