Has anyone fitted a front mount intercooler whilst still retaining the factory intake (airbox and all).

it can be done but the tubes will be very long and lots of curves. my legacy has a front mount intercooler but i took it way out of porportion. but it is the best set up you can do, from the turbo there is only one 90degre elbow. tubes go in the intercooler, tubes go out of the intercooler to the throttle body, where there is a slight 45 or just a bit more so it lines up perfect. its works very very very well but i had to get rid of abs unit and then the battery and washer tank.

how did you get rid of the abs unit? make new lines?etc..

sorry for the hijack :)

I was wondering the same thing. If possible, I'd like to relocate the ABS unit. That doesn't seem like a possibility, so I think I'll stick with a TMIC or AWIC so I can retain the ABS (since it doesn't seem to be to intrusive).

There isn't anything fundamentally difficult about relocating the ABS unit. You just need to get line and fittings to route to where the unit ends up. I don't think you'll find a nice place to mount it though.

As for getting rid of it, I think all you need to do is tee off each of the two inlets to connect them to the two outlets. The fittings are all M10x1.0mm inverted flares, at least on the regular (non-2E) Nippon unit.

its what vrg3 siad but my dad had a 1960 fiat part that fit right in its place its like a T for brake lines and it had the same threds, so it was like a piece of cake. just bend the lines in a nice spot make sure you dont brake them when you bend them or you will run in to problems.

good stuff, i was thinking about doing it that way but wasn't sure... i've been waiting to ditch that abs unit since i got the car... never used it and i figure it weighs a good chunk as well

thanks :D

Yeah, they're pretty heavy indeed.

When you do the teeing off, be sure to maintain the dual-diagonal independent circuit thing; tee one inlet to the LF and RR outlets, and the other inlet to the RF and LR outlets.

yep, good point.... now that i think about it, i could also install a brake bias controller while i'm there... of course that means doing a rear only and front only circuit setup... ideas ideas :D

Ideally, it would be in the trunk. I don't want to have to deal with the excess fluid or routing of hardlines. So I'll just leave it, lol. It doesn't seem to be intrusive, but I'll leave it until I have to remove it (if I go FMIC, which I probably wont, lol)

Sucks about the thread hijack

it would be hard to get it past the ABS, it could be done by cutting a hole before the abs and running the piping underneath the unit, just means a few more curves in the piping. who needs ABS anyway!

I think that car is using aftermarket engine management that doesn't use a MAF sensor.

I'd have to see how the Legacy compares to the Impreza (GC/GF) but if you'd be willing to relocate your battery you 'should' be able to route your inlet and outlet to a FMIC both on the drivers side leaving your stock intake piping.

Just route your post turbo piping under the TB and around to the I/C (keeping it low) then route your post I/C piping on top of that back to the TB.

That is probably the way to do the longest piping.
