i did the coffe cup mod with a tapered thermos mug and i had to muscle it on the small side but it fit. i also took out the the maf screen when i did the mod.
i didnt really notice any difference in sound except if you listen for it you can hear the recirc valve go off.
there is a verry slight difference in performance. it pulls a bit better but thats about it on that end.
on the waste gate bleed i went to loes and got a nylon elbow and for the 3/8 id the vac line that was too short i went and got some some 3/8 vac line at the pep boys. it was too big where it attached to the canister so i tightened it with a hose clamp.

Secondary protection probably.

I think it has to do with reduction of turbulance, meaning your MAF will have more errors after removing it.

its there to stop shit going into your MAF and to stop shit going into your turbo.

isn't that the filters job though?

the screen is probably there for turbulance reduction.

Think of it this way. Take off the aerator on your faucet....water goes all over the place. Put it back on and you have a nice stream of water.

Flow will be reduced slightly, but turbulance decreases.

I personally wouldn't remove the screen....but that's me.

Its probably the same principal as in a wind tunnel where the air is split by what effectively is a large screen to reduce turbulence. I agree, I'd leave it on. The air filter would also reduce turbulence to a degree, but when the shape is changed for the pipe you'll get additional turbulence. The airflow would be a little smoother also, getting closer to the sides where there would normally be a turbulant mess.
