New valve cover gaskets =)

I finally got new valve cover gaskets and got the layers of oil and grime removed. They cleaned up pretty nice.

I also got the oil fill tube and o-ring fixed. One of the bolts was broken and the o-ring was shot so my driverside valve cover was getting hosed for quite a while.

I have to admit that I was fully planning on doing this myself and I was going to try and do a detailed write up with pictures but at the last minute ended up having a shop do it. I just couldn't get the time with my current schedule.

Here's a few pics of the clean valve covers. (I forgot to get before shots)

Matt - what did it cost you at the shop?

Now that the valve cover gaskets are done, you've got the rear cam seal and then the exhaust left to do, right?

I'm so stoked to get to hear (and see) this new exhaust. You're going to run cattless right? Sweeeeeeet

It was $108 after tax for both valve cover gaskets, bolt seals, to remove a broken bolt on the oil fill tube, replace oil fill tube o-ring, clean the covers along with most of the engine and replace the brake fluid. Pretty damn good deal really which is why I did it.

I'm going to do the rear cam seal and turbo oil supply lines during the exhaust install. And yes, I will be catless.

Wow, that is a good price.

Your valve covers are all clean!

I have a question -- does a bad oil filler o-ring cause any problems with the engine? Like, does it prevent the PCV system from properly pulling a vacuum on the crankcase?

Hmmm....interesting. I didn't drive it much right afterwards and changed my oil the next day. My engine is running a little smoother but I attributed it to the oil change. I really don't know.

What did they clean that with? It looks great. When I've tried to spray the car with engine cleaner and high pressure hose it it never comes out that nice.

As far as I know they just used brake parts cleaner. I was wondering if the passengerside may have taken a trip to the solvent tank though as it's so damn shiney. lol. I wish I would have gotten before shots because it's really crazy how oily they were, I mean they were black.

I had to buff the HELL out of my turbo's valve covers to get them shiny like that. I used everything - Simple Green (less toxic in the house), carb cleaner, brake cleaner, engine cleaner, and the high pressure hose at the car wash (Wired a bunch of parts to a board to hold them in place).
